The Weberian Perspective: Exploring Social

Stratification and Differentiation and the
difference between them. This presentation will
delve into the theories of Max Weber, a
prominent sociologist, and his views on social
stratification and differentiation. According to
Weber, social stratification is founded on three
factors of class, status and power. Marx Weber is
regarded as one of the fathers of sociology, as
was said at the outset.
Social Stratification
Social stratification is the hierarchical
arrangement of individuals based on
their social status or class according to
their level of money, income, education,
occupation, social standing, and power.
He believed that social stratification
was also based on social and cultural
factors. Social Stratification is used to
learn more about how societies are
structured & social dynamics present in
all cultures.
Example: Age-Set System, Slave System
TYPES OF SOCIAL
STRATIFICATION

1. Age-Set System
2. Slave System
3. Estate System
4. Caste System
5. Class System
6. Race-Ethnic System
Class and Status
Weber distinguished between class
and status, with class based on birth or
individual factors & status being based
on social and cultural factors. Class
determines a person's economic
standing in society based on their birth
& individual accomplishments.
STATUS: A person's prestige, social
standing, or popularity in society are all
examples of status.
Power

Power is the ability to influence others. It is the

likelihood that individual or organization will
successfully enforce their desire despite
opposition from others. According to Weber
Power can be founded on various things
including wealth, prestige, intelligence, or
charisma.
Social Differentiation
Social Differentiation separates people
or social groups based on various
characteristics such as biological &
socioeconomic differences which then
assigns the person or group to different
societal roles & statuses. Weber says
social differentiation happens when
various social groupings create unique
societal roles & responsibilities. It is a
crucial part of modernization &
development of complex societies.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Weberian perspective provides a valuable
framework for understanding social stratification and
differentiation in contemporary society. By examining the
different factors that contribute to social stratification, we can
gain a better understanding of how social inequality is
perpetuated and how it impacts individuals and society as a
whole. We must continue to explore these issues and work
towards creating a more just and equitable society.
