1. This paper consists of section A and B with a total of ten (10) questions.
2. Answer all questions in section A and two (2) questions from section B.
3. Section A carries seventy (70) marks and section B carries thirty (30) marks.
4. Mathematical tables and non-programable calculators may be used.
5. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer booklet(s).
6. The following information may be useful
(a) Acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.8m/s2
(b) Pie, π = 3.14
(c) Mass of Earth = 6.0 ×1024 kg
(f) Radius of the earth, R = 6.4 × 106 m.
(g) Atomic mass of oxygen molecules(O2 ) = 32u
(h) Universal gas constant, R = 8.31J/mol K
(i) Ratio of specific heat capacities , γ = 1.67

SECTION A (60 marks)


Answer all questions in this section.
1. (a) Three physics students Michael, Mathew and Raphael were taken the
measurement of the thread of about 60.00cm lengths at four different times.
The results were recorded as follows;

(i) Comment about precious and accuracy on three observation from the
table. (03 marks)
(ii) Find percentage error for each student (03 marks)
(b) A student while doing an experiment finds that the velocity(V) of an object
varies with time t, and it can be expressed as equation of V = Xt2 +Yt + Z.
If unit of V and t are expressed in terms of SI units, determine the unit of
constants X, Y and Z in the given equation. (04 marks)
2. (a) (i) Dust from a carpet can be removed by shaking or beating it. How is it
possible? (02 marks)
(ii) Why is it difficult for a fire man to hold a hose, which ejects large amount
of water at a high velocity? (02 marks)
(b) Two points A and B are projected at the same time in the same vertical plane.
A is projected at a height of 2m above the ground and making an angle of
30◦ with the horizontal, B is projected with velocity of 30m/s at the ground
vertically below A making an angle of 60◦ with the horizontal. If they collide
together, Determine
(i) Time taken until they collide (03 marks)
(ii) Horizontal displacement in the part of collision (03 marks)
3. (a) (i) Water in a bucket whirled in a vertical circle do not spill out when whirled
fast, but when whirled slowly the water spill out, why? (02 marks)
(ii) A ball is released from a height h along the slope and at the end of a
slope moves along a circular track of radius R without falling vertically
downwards. Determine the height h in terms of R. (03 marks)

(b) (i) State one condition for an oscillatory motion to be considered as simple
harmonic motion (02 marks)
(ii) A particle executing simple harmonic motion has a velocity of 1.8m/s
when passing through its mean position and acceleration at 0.6m from
mean position is 2.4m/s2 . Find the amplitude and period of oscillation.

4. (a) A flywheel is mounted on a horizontal axle which has a radius of 0.06m. A
constant force of 50N is applied tangentially to the axle. If the moment of
inertia of the system(flywheel + axle) is 4kgm2 , calculate
(i) The angular acceleration of the flywheel (02 12 marks)
(ii) The number of revolutions that the flywheel makes in 16s assuming that
it starts from rest. (02 21 marks)
(b) (i) If escape velocity from earth for a piece of 1g is 11.2km/s, what would be
the escape velocity for an object 100times the mass of original piece?
(02 marks)
(ii) Suppose that the radius of the earth was to shrink by 1%, its mass remain
the same. What would be the acceleration due to gravity g on the earth’s
surface? (03 marks)
5. (a) (i) What is thermometric properties of a material? (02 marks)
(ii) A particular resistance thermometer has a resistance of 30Ω at the ice
point, 41.580Ω at the steam point and 34.59Ω when immersed in a
boiling liquid. A constant volume gas thermometer gives reading of
1.333 ×105 Pa, 1.821 ×105 Pa and 1.528 ×105 Pa at the respectively three
temperatures. Determine the temperature at which the liquid is boiling
on the scale of the gas thermometer and on the scale of resistance
thermometer. (03 marks)
(b) (i) Why the tile floor feels colder than the wooden floor even though both
floor materials are at the same temperature? (02 marks)
(ii) A body cools in 10 minutes from 60◦ C to 40◦ C. What will be its
temperature after next 10minutes? The temperature of the surroundings
is 10◦ C. (03 marks)
6. (a) At 27◦ C two moles of an ideal mono atomic gas occupy a volume V. The gas
expands adiabatically to a volume 2V, calculate
(i) change in its internal energy (02 12 marks)
(ii) the work done by the gas during the process (02 12 marks)
(b) (i) What is Wien’s displacement law? Give one limitation of this law.

(ii) Two bodies A and B have thermal emissivities of 0.01 and 0.81
respectively. The outer surface areas of the two bodies are the same. The
two bodies emit total radiant power at the same rate. The wavelength λB
corresponding to maximum spectral radiancy from B is shifted from the
wavelength corresponding to maximum spectral radiancy in the radiation
from A by 1.0µm. If the temperature of A is 5802K, calculate the
wavelength of B (λB ) (03 marks)
7. (a) (i) The main interior of the earth core is believed to be in molten form. What
is seismic evidence supports this believe? (03 marks)
(ii) Explain why the Ozone layers on the top of the stratosphere is crucial for
human survival? (03 marks)
(b) (i) List down four physical changes that took place at a location just before
onset of an earthquake at that particular location. (02 marks)
(ii) What are the advantages of windbreaks to plant environment?
(02 marks)

8. (a) (i) Briefly explain why a.c is most useful for domestic uses of electricity
supply than d.c? (02 marks)
(ii) What is the advantages of using a greater length of a potentiometer wire?

(iii) Why is wheatstone bridge not suitable for measuring low resistance?

(b) (i) Define the term junction as applied in electrical network. (02 marks)
(ii) Find the current through each of the resistor in a circuit below. The
batteries have negligible internal resistances. (03 marks)

9. (a) (i) An operating amplifier has an open loop gain of 10000. Calculate the
amplifier gain when 10% of the output is fed back to the inverting input.

(ii) The figure shown below has a supply voltage of 15V. The input
resistance is 1.6KΩ and the feedback resistance is 20kΩ. Calculate the
output voltage when the input voltage is 1.8V (02 marks)

10. (a) (i) Where does the fermi level lie in a conductor, insulator and
semiconductor? (02 marks)
(ii) Why is a p-n junction also called junction diode? (02 marks)
(b) (i) Why does the width of depletion layer of p-n junction increase in reverse
biasing? (02 marks)
(ii) A common emitter amplifier has an input resistance of 0.5kΩ and an
output resistance of 45kΩ. If β = 65, Find the voltage gain and power

(c) In the figure below, VBB supply can be varied from 0V to 5.0V. The Silicon
transistor has βdc = 250 and RB = 100kΩ, RC = 1kΩ, VCC = 5.0V. Assume
that when the transistor is saturated VCE = 0V and VBE = 0.8V.
