Questions on Spring

Q.1 Differentiate closed coil and open coil helical spring.

A closed coil helical spring post free length when not compressed is 15 cm, required to absorb
Strain energy equal to 50 Nm when fully compressed with the coils in contact. the maximum
shearing stress is limited to 140 MPa. Assuming a mean coil diameter of 10 cm, find the
diameter of the steel wire required and number of coils. C = 80 GPa. (kuk MOS 2018, 2019)
Q2. The span of a simply supported and centrally loaded laminated steel ring is 650 mm. The
central deflection of the string does not exceed 360 MPa. Find the suitable values of width,
thickness and number plates if they are available in multiples of 1 mm for thickness and 5 mm
for width. Also find the radius to which the plates should be formed. Assume the width to be 10
times the thickness. E = 205 GPa. (kuk SOM 2017)
Q3. Discuss the stresses in open coil helical spring subjected to twisting moment. A semi
elliptical leaf spring 1 m long has 2 leaves of full length and 7 quarter leaves. The spring is to
carry a maximum load of 5.4 kN. Taking allowable stress as 490 N/mm2, calculate the width and
thickness of leaves, if deflection is not to exceed 7.5 cm, when (a) all leaves are equally stressed
and (b) leaves have no initial tension. Take E = 200 GPa.
Q4. A laminated Steel Spring simply supported at the ends and centrally loaded with a span of
0.75 m, is required to carry a proof load of 750 kg and the central deflection is not to exceed 50
mm, the bending stress not exceed 380 N/mm2. Plates are available in multiples of 1 mm for
thickness and 4 mm for width. Determine the suitable values for width, thickness and number of
plates, and calculate radius to which the plates should be framed. Assume width = 10 x
thickness. E = 208, 000 N/mm2.
Q5. Write a short note on concentric spring
A leaf spring is made of plates 50 mm wide and 8 mm thick. The spring has span of 700 mm.
Determine the number of plates required to carry a central load of 4.5 k N. The maximum
allowable stress in the plates is 200 MPa. What is the maximum deflection under the load?
Determine the strain stored in the spring under the load. (kuk 2015)
Q6. A leaf spring 750 mm long is required to carry a Central load of 8 kN. If the central
deflection is not to exceed 20 mm and bending stress no greater than 200 MPa, determine width,
thickness and number of plates. Also compute the radius to which the plates must be curved,
Assume width of plate to be 12 times its thickness. E = 200 GPa. Drive the formulae used. (kuk
2014)
Q7. An open coil helical spring of 50 mm mean diameter is made of steel of 6 mm diameter.
Calculate the number of turns required in the spring to give a deflection of 12 mm for an axial
load of 250 N if the angle of hellix is 30 degree. Write the formula used. (SOM, kuk 2013)
