SYNTHESIS WRITING

Phases & actions of the synthesis essay

Phase Actions
Introduce the theme dealt with in the sources (lead-in).
Introduction Present the sources, their titles and authors. (or simply use the labels they have A, B or C …)
Thesis Statement
The piece of writing should be divided into 2 logical paragraphs. One idea/subtopic for each paragraph.
Use a topic sentence (main idea) for each paragraph & connect it with the thesis explicitly.
Body & Development Support each paragraph’s main idea with at least 2 quoted details; (Use details from 2 different sources).
Comment on each detail. (comparing, contrasting, critiquing and/or interpreting)
Use clear short sentences. Unambiguous content reaches the reader faster.
Avoid repetitions for better organization and provide appropriate linkers within & between paragraphs.
Remind readers of the main theme.
Conclusion Restate/ reinforce your thesis.
Recommend/ suggest further research or action to tackle the phenomenon under discussion.
Title Provide a title for your synthesis instead of calling it “Synthesis”.
Proofreading for final draft Try to find and correct mechanical errors: (subject-verb agreement, plurals, possessives, …).
