Practical Research 1 Written Task 1

Final Term, Second Semester

Text Analysis

The primary purpose of this worksheet is to ensure that the writer has developed an

effective text (paragraphs). The following set of questions is one tool you will use to analyze

texts. In order to do an effective and complete analysis, consider all questions under each

heading, and then write a paragraph describing the particular area of the text under consideration,

giving specific examples from the text to support your answer. Rather than answer each specific

question, use the questions to guide your analysis. Group your answers under the respective

headings.

Part I

Paragraph No. Key Idea/s

Paragraph discusses the emergence of the 21st
century skills or the 4C’s. It explains that
critical thinking, communication,
collaboration, and creativity are skills that
should be integrated when it comes to Science
subject as these skills helps students to
observe, measure, classify, inquire, and
synthesize. 4C’s are also effective when it
comes in enhancing student’s science
Paragraph 1 processing skills.
According to California State Polytechnic
University, there are ways and strategies to
justify different scientific ideas and effective
teaching of the science subject to students.
Strategies are focused in engaging students in
various activities that partakes deeper
knowledge and understanding for

Paragraph discusses that reading is another

strategy to immerse students in understanding
science well. Through the process of reading,
students can be analytical to the text they are
reading. When a student is analytic, they can
produce inquiries with higher level questions
that could help them form hypothesis and
Paragraph 3 solve problems.
The paragraph talks about the importance of
reading narrative and expository texts to
improve student’s inference skills. With this,
students will be able to clearly understand and
comprehend what they are reading because
they can relate to it. Simply, the use of
literature in science can also be a key in
improving their ability of conceptualization
Paragraph 4 and being rational thinkers.
It is said that poems and short stories drives
the ability of a person to imagine and judge.
In relation to science, broader thinking can
help students to further express themselves by
giving ideas, making own interpretations, and
associate themselves into deeper learning
Paragraph 5 process.
Paragraph 6 Paragraph explains that poem is one of the
effective way to unleash student’s capacity of
higher order thinking skills. In similar to
science, forming interpretations and
conclusions based on own understanding of
data presented helps in developing science
processing skills. But poem does not

necessarily have a direct effect on student’s

science process skill.
In the process of teaching and learning,
students have the ability to be a rational
thinker, sense of logic, and be systematic
along the way. These could develop student’s
skills more in many aspects, especially in
Paragraph 7 science.
The last paragraph concludes the aim of the
study by identifying the correlation between
poetic interpretation skills and science process
skills of STEM strand students of Theresian

Part II.

I. Purpose

 Describe the text’s overall purpose (to inform, to entertain, to persuade, etc.)

The text is all about the correlation of poetic interpretation skills and science process

skills, thus it is coded as a study. Therefore, the main purpose of the text is to give

information to the readers and knowledge about the topics being discussed. The text

delivered concise ideas yet very informative. The topics is clearly explained and their

relations with each other in the student’s process of learning is elaborated. As I read the text,

it gave me a definite understanding on the importance of having 21 st century skills when it

comes to learning science and understanding literature. There are instances in the text that

enlightened me about ways and strategies on how to improve my processing skills as a

student. The text solely focus on the relation of poetic skill and science process skill. The

target readers of the texts are obviously both teacher and student. It is to give idea on how to

achieve these two skills at the same time. The text gave many points for a teacher on what

they have to do to effectively teach science and for their students to achieve these kind of

skills. As for the students, the text wanted to give ways on how they will help themselves

improve more to execute the two skills in learning. I think that the purpose of the text is not

hidden. Even though there not much deeper discussion, it directly explained the correlation

of poetic interpretation skills and science process skills to the affected participants of the

study.

II. Audience/Reader

The intended audience of the text are the teachers and the students. Because before

students achieve both skills in learning, teachers must initiate facilitating the students first as

they go on into the teaching-learning. I’m also part of the intended audience since I’m a student

taking STEM at Theresian School of Cavite. Some assumptions present is that students are

having doubts in learning science subject is because they think it is too hard for them. But if they

will improve and develop their processing skills, they will understand the subject. Another is for

the readers to have their own understanding of connection of literature in learning science, which

science is not only all about scientific ideas but also real life scenarios that people can all relate

to. For the point of view of the text, it is third person point of view. The speaker of the text is the

researcher. In the point of view of a researcher, he or she explain and discuss the topic not to

themselves and to someone they are close with, but to the other people or the intended audience

like teachers and students.

III. Content Analysis (examine a specific article from the text)

The author’s thesis is the passage: ‘The fact that science has brought enormous

improvement in the world and continuously leading it to change brings challenge on the

teachers on how to further enhance students’ skills in science.’ This only means that

Science has brought a major change in the world. As Science continuously evolve,

teachers must find a new way on how to make students more engage in learning the

subject and improve their skills of understanding of science. The author wanted to

address the problem that the reason why students are having a hard time learning science

is because they cannot fully understand what they are looking at. That is why the author

correlates the essence of poetic interpretation because like poems, students must practice

reading and comprehension to be able to form own hypothesis and rational conclusions.

The author used analytic evidences such as an article by Kispal published in 2008 and

another study in 2012 that is related to the current study. A key passage in the text is:

‘Hence, by exposing students to text and gives them a question to ponder increases their

skills to explain scientific matter.’ There might be some parts that others may find

incomprehensible but the text obviously deliver what it meant to deliver to the readers.

IV. Organization and Evidence

The author gave a brief explanation of what is poetic interpretation and science

process and the strategies to ponder it. There are citations in the text serves as a

supporting evidence of where the ideas and additional information came from. The author

also gave explanation for teachers take about achieving the skills as well as for the

students take about the topic. The author then gave examples and suggestions to further

give support to the ideas. Some of it are the other authors and institution as a source.

Having these supporting evidences helped the author to effectively deliver the point of

the text. I see that the author used much more supporting evidence through different

sources but I also think that some statements are based from his or her knowledge about

the topic. The author did not purely rely on his or her own knowledge and experience

about the topic but also used ideas and information from credible sources which gave the

text a much stronger impact for the readers.

V. Language and Style

The tone of the author is formal, therefore, it is for academic purposes. The tone of

the author is effective because the main purpose of the text is to inform and the target

audience are both teachers and students, it is easy to understand the details. The

construction of sentences in the text aren’t difficult to understand since the author used

vocabulary that is easy to comprehend and straight to the point. The structure of

sentences were quite formed well and it clearly conveyed what the author wanted to tell

the readers. Some words the author used are related to the topic being discussed so it is

convenient for the readers to get the point of the text.

VI. Conclusions

What I have learned about is that there is certainly a way to connect literature to

science to a most effective way to learn the science subject and develop science

processing skills of a person. Through the publication, people will be able to understand

the importance of teaching science especially to STEM students as it will help them to

enhance and discover new skills in relation to the integration of literature. The

publication’s purpose is to strengthen the abilities of a STEM student like me on rational

thinking, analysing, synthesizing, observation, and critical thinking as they will be in the

field of science as in the future. Science is indeed a difficult subject but there are much

more on what is seen. Learning Science is knowing the world and knowing the world is a

privilege. But to learn requires deeper understanding and that is the target of the

publication. The intention of the publication is to make everyone realize that students

must be a good reader and thinker to understand scientific ideas and showcase their

processing skills. The publication might be helpful for people who are struggling in

science subject and to improve themselves more.
