My research took interest in assessing the
level of the actual reading comprehension
skills of the students and testing the
effectiveness of the schema theory in
describing the students’ reading performance
level. Whether the three types of schemas
(script knowledge, linguistic knowledge,
knowledge of text structures) are major
contributors to the students’ reading
comprehension skills and whether or not
schema theory presents a very efficient
course in developing students' reading skills.

knowledge, linguistic knowledge, and
knowledge of text structures.

As an English major and as a future English
teacher, I know that comprehension is the
ultimate outcome of having read. It is the
most important ongoing activity of reading.
Without comprehension, how can we explain
how readers understand and remember text?
This question motivates me to conduct this
study.
A powerful feature of the schema theory is
that it helps is to better understand how new
learning is integrated with the knowledge an
individual already possesses. It tries to
explain how we learn, modify, and use
information acquired through our life
experiences, including reading.

This is bridging the gap between what is
already known and what is new in text
information.
The results of this study may serve as a basis
in improving teaching and learning
approaches regarding on the reading
comprehension skills for students. This
research is useful to improve the quality of
education and in developing the English
language teaching, mainly in establishing the
reading comprehension skills.
I use Anderson and Pearson’s Schema
Theory because they stated that there are
three types of knowledge that must be
actively used by a reader to bridge the gap
between what is already known and what is
new in text information. These may be used
in different combinations by the reader to
make sense out of text. These types of
knowledge are important with the variables I
am working with in my study.
As can be seen, my conceptual framework
illustrates what we expect to find through my
research. It defines the relevant variables for
my study which are schema theory and the
reading performance, and maps out how the
prior variable might affect to later.
The best research design to answer our
research questions is descriptive-correlational
research design. The nature of descriptive
correlational research is to describe the
relationship of two variables found in the data
collected through a questionnaire.
