Struggles and Coping Strategies of Street Vendors in Barangay Palatiw, Pasig City
During High Inflation in the Country, Year 2023

RESEARCH (Insert here your 1-2 pages introduction)

INTRODUCTION
In recent years, the Philippines has faced the challenge of high inflation rates,

challenges in their daily lives. Rising prices of goods and services due to inflation

>Highlight gray they have preserved the street culture food of every country, and they have been
your rationale a part of our daily lives during those days when we have had a long day of work,
>Highlight pink school, and other responsibilities. One of the difficulties that every street vendor
faces is high inflation. Inflation is the rate at which the prices of goods and
your conclusion
services rise over time. Its inflation depreciates the value of money over time. It
can also be calculated by examining price changes over time. Street vendors play
an important role in the informal economy providing goods and services at
affordable prices to urban and rural communities. They often operate in public
places and sell a variety of products such as food, clothing, and household
items. However, their ability to earn a decent income and support their families
is greatly hindered by the high inflation rate prevalent in the country. This study
aims to explore the difficulties street vendors will experience in the face of high
inflation in the Philippines in 2023. In the Philippines, street food is a way of life
and, at times, a source of contention. Despite the advances Filipino food has
made in the United States, our local food continues to elicit strong opinions from
foreigners, with one female writer once calling Filipino food "the worst in Asia."
One travel blogger singled out our street food, saying she'd rather starve” than
eat it again. (Beltran, 2023).
Practical Research 1 11
Food prices mounted following the lockdowns, street vendors themselves will
not be alone in the fight for food. Low-income households that rely on street
vendors for food supply now must pay more to access food. That could have
widespread impacts. The UN report further warns that this pandemic could
double the number of people suffering acute hunger, create a global recession
that could disrupt food supply chains and add to the struggles, particularly
concerns of people working in the informal economy. With many street vendors
facing near total loss of customers, they contended that the only way to survive
was to get economic help from the government and other organizations. This
need also led to street vendors' protests in August, as they demanded COVID-19
relief grants from the government. Food prices have been rising for months due
to scarcity, a weak peso, and disruptions in the global supply chain. October was
no exception, with inflation reaching 7.7%, the highest level in nearly fourteen
years. Most consumers have already felt the impact of recent food price increases
on their lunch budgets and pantry space. Inflation, on the other hand, threatens
wet market vendors' entire livelihood. One Saturday morning, scenes at the
Moonwalk Talipapa and the adjacent Suki Market in Las Pias revealed a slow-
moving, sleepy crowd. Vendors hawked their latest wares, but few buyers moved
from stall to stall. People mostly congregated in the areas closest to the sidewalk.
There were almost no vendors or buyers deeper inside the palengke. (Yu, 2022)

This study aims to shed light on the specific challenges they face such as
rising material costs and limited access to credit. and reduce customer
purchasing power. Understanding their experiences in the context of inflation is
important to develop effective policies and interventions to support this
vulnerable sector. Additionally, this study will examine the coping strategies
used by street vendors to cope with high inflation. Despite the adversity they
face, street vendors have shown resilience and resourcefulness in finding ways to
adapt and survive. By identifying and analyzing their coping strategies, they can
gain valuable information, which can inform future initiatives to improve the
livelihoods of salespeople. and minimize the negative effects of inflation. The
results of this study will contribute to the existing literature on the informal
economy, especially about the challenges posed by inflation. It is hoped that the
knowledge gained will help policymakers, government agencies and NGOs
develop targeted interventions to support street vendors and reduce challenges
they face amid high inflation rates in the Philippines. Additionally, this study
aims to raise public awareness of the struggle and resilience of street vendors,
thereby promoting a more empathetic and inclusive society that values their
contributions. contribution of this disadvantaged group.

In conclusion, this study would enable people regarding the struggles faced
by the street vendors in Barangay Palatiw Pasig City. This could help them in
informing and be able to help them in their everyday circumstances. This could
help build their confidence in stating their own opinions and perceptions on how
they cope with high inflation. The researchers would be able to influence them
on how and when they experience different problems in their daily lives. This will
greatly affect their perspective on how they deal with these hindrances. The
study would help people in times of need to a better society.

This study was conducted to determine the struggles of street

vendors in Pasig during the high inflation rate in the country. The
researchers will focus on the street vendors in Pasig that experienced the
struggle by the high inflation and addressing their coping strategy. This
research focuses solely on the experiences and challenges of street
vendors in Barangay Palatiw, Pasig City. It does not address the issues
with street vending in other areas of Pasig City or other cities. The
primary economic factor under consideration is inflation. The study's goal
is to investigate how high inflation rates affect the livelihoods and
businesses of Palatiw's street vendors. It does not delve deeply into other
economic variables, such as exchange rates or interest rates. To gain
insights into the struggles of street vendors, this study primarily relies on
qualitative research methods, such as interviews, surveys, and case
studies. This study does not include quantitative analyses or economic
modeling.

The study primarily focuses on inflation and does not thoroughly

analyze other economic factors like changes in consumer spending or
fluctuations in demand for street vendors' products. It also does not
extensively explore the demographics of street vendors or government
policies and regulations that impact street vending in Palatiw.

SPECIFIC Students
BENEFITS
This study would further benefit the students, for them to be aware of
the underlying issues about inflation and to be advocates for the street
vendors as well. This will enable them to be inspired and to have a voice
towards the rights of the street vendors as well.

Teachers

This will help the teachers to teach their students some issues about the
status of the street vendors and give awareness to them in a way that
they will be empathetic towards being an advocate to the youth. Inflation,
economic status and rights of the people are some of the objectives of this
research.

Future Researchers

Furthermore, the study adds to academic understanding of the

complex relationship between inflation and informal economies. It
contributes to the body of knowledge in fields such as economics, urban
studies, and sociology, with the potential to inspire additional research
and academic exploration in these areas. The study emphasizes issues of
social equity on a broader scale of social justice and human rights. It
raises concerns about human rights protection, particularly the right to
work and earn a living, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that
marginalized urban populations are not disproportionately affected by
inflation. In conclusion, a study on the struggles of street vendors in the
face of inflation has far-reaching implications. It has economic, social,
and policy implications.
