LESSON PLAN IN TEACHING SCIENCE 5

I. OBJECTIVES:

The learners should be able to:

1. investigate changes that happen in materials under the following conditions; presence or lack of
oxygen; (S5MT-Ic-d-2)
2. discuss the effects of presence or absence of oxygen in a material.
3. Appreciate the existence and value of oxygen

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: Changes in Matter in the Presence or Absence of Oxygen

References: Science Beyond Borders 5, pp. 26-29
Instructional Materials Needed: potato, apple, knife, 4 jars, 4 small candles, match, timer, ruler, rusty
nail
Science Skill: Observing
Valuing: Appreciate the existence and value of oxygen

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Preliminary Activities
Teacher’s Activities Pupil’s Activities
a. Greetings:
Good day Grade 5 pupils! How are you? Are you
excited to learn new lesson today?
b. Review: Drill Exercise:
Last time you have learned the properties of Direction: Observe the following materials. Shout
materials whether they are useful or harmful as HURRAY if they are useful, and shout HEPHEP if
discussed by teacher Cath. Let me check if you they are harmful.
already understand the lesson. I will show you
pictures of different materials; all you have to do 1. empty bottles (picture)
is to shout HURRAY if it is USEFUL and HEPHEP if 2. fruit peelings (picture)
it is HARMFUL. 3. expired medicine (picture)
4. scratch papers (picture)
5. shattered glass (picture)

(pictures will be presented one by one)

B. Developmental Activities

a. Motivation:
SING A SONG!
It’s SCIENCE TIME
again It’s SCIENCE
TIME again Oh! Let’s
be happy, YES It’s
SCIENCE TIME again
(2x)

b. Unlocking of Difficulties:
This time, before we proceed to our discussion,
let’s us read the following words louder.

● Matter ● Presence
● Changes ● Absence
● Observe ● Oxygen

These are the words that we will encounter as

we go along with our lesson. Let’s have these one
by one.

MATTER: is anything that has mass and takes up

space, whether solid, liquid, or gas. (in Tagalog,
ito yung mga bagay na nakikita natin sa paligid)

CHANGES: to make new forms (in Tagalog, mga

pagbabago)

OBSERVE: look closely using different senses to

discover something (in Tagalog, obserbahan)
(Pupils watching at home will read words, and
PRESENCE: being present in a place or thing (in listen to their meanings)
Tagalog, presensya, maaaring nakikita, naririnig,
o nararamdaman)

ABSENCE: being away in a place or thing (in

Tagalog, kawalan, maaaring hindi nakikita o hindi
nararamdaman)

OXYGEN: a kind of gas that is life-supporting

component of the air, 21% of atmosphere is
made of oxygen (in Tagalog, oksidyen, o yung
hangin na kinakailangan ng mga tao at iba pang
nilalang na may buhay dito sa Mundo)
c. Presentation/Discussion of the lesson
This time children, you will be using your
observation skill as we explore our lesson
for today through experimentations.

But before we proceed to our first experiment,

let us keep in mind the following safety
measures:
1. Follow teacher’s procedures correctly.
2. Be careful with sharp tools.
3. Do not play while doing an experiment.
4. Wear proper clothing when needed.
5. Wash your hands after an experiment.

Experiment No. 1 –

GROUP 1

Title:
FIRE OUT!

Materials:
-1 small and 1 big jars
-2 small candles of the same sizes
-match
-timer
-ruler
Procedures Pupils will observe and record their observation
1. Light one of the candles. at home while the teacher is doing an
2. Cover it with a smaller jar. experiment.
3. Using a timer, as the pupils to record how
many seconds it takes for the flame of the Jars Time of the flame Length of
was put out the candle
candle to be put out. after
4. The teacher will measure the length of a burning
candle after it burned out.
5. Repeat the procedure using the next size of jar.
6. Let the children find out which jars has
the longest time of candle to be put out and
the easiest to be put out.
7. Have them find out also the longest and the
shortest candle after burning
Now, let’s answer the following questions about 1. What changes in material did you
the experiment. observe when the candle was lit?

2. What do you observe with the lighted candle

after it was covered with a jar?
3. Why do you think the flame disappear when
the candle was covered with the jar?
In our first experiment, the candle needs oxygen
from the air to continue burning. If there is
absence of oxygen, the candle will not continue
to burn.

And this has something to do with COMBUSTION.

Combustion refers to the process where the
substance burns in the presence of oxygen.

Experiment No. 2

GROUP 2

Title: Oh My Color

Materials:
-a piece of apple
- a piece of potato
- knife
-plate
The pupils will observe closely to the experiment
Procedure: and record their observations.
1. Cut the apple and potato into four.
2. Let the pupils observe their colors right after
cutting.
3. Let the pupils observe their colors after a few 1. What do you observed with the color of the
minutes. apple and potato right after cutting?
4. Let them record their observations. 2. What do you observed with their colors after 5
minutes. Do you observe any changes?
Now let’s answer the following questions about
the experiment.
In our second experiment, we observed that the
colors of the apple and potato changed from
yellowish to brownish.

How this change happened?

The change in color of the inner fleshy part of the

apple and potato is due to their exposure to
oxygen. The same phenomena could also observe
in other fruits and vegetables.

Remember children, food spoiled or changed its

properties as a result oxygen reacting with the
enzymes found in the food. This is called
OXIDATION.

Please say this word at home. OXIDATION! Oxidation!

Oxidation is the combination of a substance with

oxygen.

Now children, another effect of presence of

oxygen in some materials is what we called
RUSTING.

Please say this word at home, RUSTING! Rusting!

If you may observe, some iron nails and roofs in

your house have rust.

Do you have any idea what causes the formation

of rust?

Rusting is caused by the reaction of iron with

oxygen present in the air. This kind of reaction is
slower than the rate of combustion. The amount
of rust formed in an iron depends on the
moisture and humidity of the surroundings.
So, what are we going to do to prevent rusting of
iron?
1. Keep it clean and dry.
2. Protect it from scratches.
3. Apply protective coat like paint.

D. Generalization:

From the experiments and discussions, we can

conclude that exposing some objects to oxygen
produces various effects. Oxidation, combustion,
and rusting can happen to some materials if
there is presence of oxygen.

E. Evaluation:
If the statement is True, please say FACT na
FACT, and if the statement is False, say, BLUFF na
BLUFF.

1. Fruits like apple and other vegetables can 1. FACT NA FACT

change their colors when exposed to
oxygen.
2. FACT NA FACT
2. Oxidation is the combination of a substance
with oxygen.
3. BLUFF NA BLUFF
3. If there is absence of oxygen, materials like
candle will continue to burn.
4. FACT NA FACT
4. Combustion refers to the process where the
substance burns in the presence of oxygen.
5. BLUFF NA BLUFF
5. Rusting can happen to materials like wood
and paper.
