Daily Answer Writing Initiative Day 3

1. What do you understand by Remote sensing? Explain the applications of remote sensing
satellites? (10 marks, 150 Words)

Approach:
 Introduction: Define Remote sensing briefly.
 Body: Explain the applications of remote sensing satellites one by one.
 Conclusion: Sum up the entire answer and give the future potential of remote sensing satellites.

Answer:
Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making
physical contact with the object, in contrast to in situ or on-site observation. The term is applied especially
to acquiring information about Earth and other planets. Remote sensing is used in numerous fields, including
geography, land surveying and most Earth science disciplines. The term remote sensing generally refers to the
use of satellite- or aircraft-based sensor technologies to detect and classify objects on Earth. It includes the
surface and the atmosphere and oceans, based on propagated signals.

Applications of Remote sensing satellites:

 To combat desertification, remote sensing allows researchers to follow up and monitor risk areas in the
long term and to determine desertification factors.
 Remote sensing has been used to detect rare plants to aid in conservation efforts. Prediction, detection,
and the ability to record biophysical conditions were possible from medium to very high resolutions.
 Active remote sensing satellite provides multipurpose and high resolution data, which can be used for
defence purposes.
 HySIS (Hyperspectral Imaging Satellite) is useful in agriculture, mineral exploration and defence
application.
 RISAT is used in kharif crop evaluation, flood evaluation and disaster management.
 Ultrasound (acoustic) and radar tide gauges measure sea level, tides and wave direction in coastal and
offshore tide gauges.
 Radiometers are also used at night, because artificial light emissions are a key signature of human activity.
Applications include remote sensing of population, GDP, and damage to infrastructure from war or
disasters.
 Cartosat is dedicated to mapping and infrastructural development in cities and villages.

We are only now beginning to witness the widespread use of remote sensing technologies, such as satellites
that can address navigational and climate change challenges. If we're going to address some of the biggest
problems of our day, satellite information is very essential. Overall, it's a field that is growing and reaching
new heights. Remote sensing offers a wealth of data on a worldwide scale for concerns including climate
change, natural resources, disaster management, and the environment.
