RMK 234_Assignment Brief (2023/2024/1)_20%

A building cost estimate is a critical component of the construction planning process, providing an
approximation of the financial resources required to complete a construction project. The importance
of a building cost estimate lies in its ability to guide decision-making, budgeting, and resource
allocation throughout the various stages of a construction project. On the other hand, a construction
built-up rate, often referred to as a unit rate or cost per unit area, is a measure of cost applied to a
specific unit of construction work, such as per square meter or square foot. The importance of
construction built-up rates lies in their ability to streamline cost estimation, budgeting, and project
management.

For this assignment, you are required to perform the followings:

a) Explain on the basic principles involved in determining price rates for excavation and
earthwork.
b) Show areas of work involved in building up rates for excavation and earthworks (e.g., different
soil types, etc.).
c) Recommend a detailed price assessment (built-up rate) for excavation and earthworks using
a ‘real-life’ drawing as an example. For this purpose, you should obtain a detailed drawing of
excavation and earthwork from any reliable source (e.g., JKR, construction firm, etc.). In doing
so, should you need to make assumptions, please mention them clearly. Also, you are required
to attach the drawing with your submission and clearly mark the area you have covered for
your built-up rate.

Requirements:
i) Your assignment should not exceed fifteen (15) pages including references thus, make sure
that you are being precise and include only relevant information to avoid being unnecessarily
lengthy or lack in useful information.
ii) Provide appropriate citation and referencing.
iii) Each group should consist of four (4) members only. This class has only 16 students so 4 groups
can be formed.
iv) Submission deadline is 13/01/2024 at 11.59pm and are submitted via e-learn platform.
v) Submission should also include “Turn-it-in” report which should not exceed 20% in similarity.
NOTE: Submissions that fail to meet the requirements (group number, deadline and turn-it-in) will
