EX 1: Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force, FR measured
counterclockwise from the positive x axis. Solve the problem by first finding the resultant
F´ = F1 + F2 and then forming FR = F´+ F3.
Solution:
Draw the triangle that F1 and F2 and their resultant F´make.
Use the law of cosines (the Pythagorean theorem) to determine the magnitude of F´ .

Draw the triangle that F´and F3 and their resultant FR make.

EX2: Determine the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the plate and its direction,
measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis
Solution:
Begin by finding the angle θ that F3 makes with the x-axis.
3 3
tan θ = → θ = tan-1( ) ≈ 36.9°
4 4
| FR | = √(1420 + 750 cos 45°)2 + (750 sin 45° − 390)2 ≈ 1.96 × 103 N
and the direction it points in counterclockwise from the positive x-axis is
750 sin 45° − 390
tan φ = → φ ≈ 4.12°
1420 + 750 cos 45°

EX3: Determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its direction, measured
counterclockwise from the positive x axis.
Solution:
Write each of the forces in component form
F1 = 200 (sin 45°, cos 45°) N
F2 = 150 (cos 30°, − sin 30°) N
Add them together to get the resultant force
FR = F1 + F2
= (200 sin 45° + 150 cos 30°, 200 cos 45° − 150 sin 30°) N
≈ (271, 66.4) N
Its magnitude is
| FR | =√ (200 sin 45° + 150 cos 30°)2 + (200 cos 45° − 150 sin 30°)2 N
FR ≈ 279 N
and the direction it points in counterclockwise from the positive x-axis is
