Introduction of the Topic

Lesson 1: Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

Suppose letters in the English alphabet are assigned with numbers as follows:

Lesson 2: Addition and Subtraction of Polynomials

Rules for Adding Polynomials

 To add polynomials, simply combine similar terms.
Similar or like terms are terms with the same literal coefficients.
Literal coefficient is the variable including its exponent.
 To combine similar terms, get the sum of the numerical coefficients and affix the same
literal coefficients.
 For convenience, arrange the addends vertically if the polynomials have three or more
terms. Align similar terms in the same column.

Examples:

1. 26𝑎𝑏 + 7𝑏 + (−8𝑎𝑏) = __________

Solution:
26𝑎𝑏 + 7𝑏 + (−8𝑎𝑏) = [26 + (−8)]𝑎𝑏 + 7𝑏 Add the numerical coefficients 26 and -8.
= 𝟏𝟖𝒂𝒃 + 𝟕𝒃 Affix the literal coefficient 𝑎𝑏 and copy +7𝑏
since there is no other similar term that it
can be combined with.
2. (8𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 3) + (−2𝑥 2 + 11) = __________

Solution: Align similar terms vertically.

8x 2 + 4x − 3 Add the numerical coefficients and affix the
+ −2x 2 + 11 literal coefficient.
𝟔𝐱 𝟐 + 𝟒𝐱 + 𝟖

MATH 7 QUARTER 2 WEEK 4 P a g e 4 | 10

3. Compute the sum of(5𝑥 + 3𝑥 2 − 3),
(−𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 − 𝑥)𝑎𝑛𝑑(2𝑥 4 − 4𝑥 3 + 10). Make sure that the polynomials are
arranged in standard form.
Solution:
3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 3 Align the terms vertically. In case that no
−𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 − 𝑥 term is similar with the other polynomial/s,
+ 2𝑥 − 4𝑥 3
4 + 10 simply leave a space. See the encircled part
2𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 + 7 in the solution.

Answer: 𝟐𝒙𝟒 − 𝟓𝒙𝟑 + 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟕 Add the terms vertically.

Notice that the opposite terms 3𝑥 2and −3𝑥 2 . Opposite numbers when added will result to zero.
That is why in the solution, the terms 3𝑥 2 and −3𝑥 2 were cancelled out.

4. What is 3𝑥 + 5𝑦 more than −10𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 5𝑧?

Solution: Align similar terms vertically.

−10𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 5z Add the similar terms.
+ 3𝑥 + 5𝑦
−7𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 5𝑧

5. What is the perimeter of an equilateral triangle if Solution:

its side is represented by the polynomial Since equilateral triangle have three
(5𝑥 + 2) 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠? sides equal, simply add its sides to get the
perimeter. That is:
(5𝑥 + 2) + (5𝑥 + 2) + (5𝑥 + 2) = 15𝑥 + 6
Answer: 15𝑥 + 6 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠

6. 7𝑥 + 6𝑥 = __________

Solution:
7𝑥 + 6𝑥 = (7 + 6)𝑥 Add the numerical coefficients 7 and 6.
= 𝟏𝟑𝒙 Affix the literal coefficient 𝑥.
7. 𝑚 + (−8𝑚) = __________

Solution:
𝑚 + (−8𝑚) = [(1) + (−8)]𝑚 Add the numerical coefficients 1 and -8.
= −𝟕𝒎 Affix the literal coefficient 𝑚.

Rules for Subtracting Polynomials

 To subtract polynomials, remember CCC then proceed to the addition rule.
 Copy the minuend
 Change the operation to addition
 Change the sign of every term in the subtrahend
 Remember that subtraction means adding the negative of the quantity. In symbols,
o 𝑎−𝑏 = 𝑎 + (−𝑏)
o 𝑎− (−𝑏) = 𝑎+𝑏
o −𝑎 − 𝑏 = −𝑎 + (−𝑏)
o −𝑎 − (−𝑏) = −𝑎 + 𝑏
 For convenience, if the polynomials have three or more terms, arrange them vertically
and align similar terms in the same column.

MATH 7 QUARTER 2 WEEK 4 P a g e 5 | 10

Examples:
1. 7𝑥 − 6𝑥 = __________
Solution: Copy the minuend 7𝑥, change the operation to addition
7𝑥 − 6𝑥 = 7𝑥 + (−6𝑥) and change the sign of the subtrahend.
Proceed just like in adding polynomials.
= [7 + (−6)]𝑥
The sum of 7 and -6 is 1. However, keep in mind that one
=𝒙 multiplied by any number will always result to the same
number. Hence, the coefficient 1 should not be
written anymore.
To sum it up, 7𝑥 − 6𝑥 = 𝑥.
2. 3𝑚 − (−8𝑚) − 3𝑚 =__________ In this example, 3𝑚 is the minuend and both −8𝑚 and
Solution: 3𝑚 are the subtrahend.

3𝑚 − (−8𝑚) − 3𝑚 = 3𝑚 + 8𝑚 − 3𝑚 Copy the minuend 3m.

Change the operation to addition.
Change the sign of the first subtrahend. That is, −8𝑚
becomes 8𝑚.
= 3𝑚 + 8𝑚 + (−3𝑚) Change again the operation to addition.
Lastly, change the sign of the second subtrahend.
So, 3𝑚 becomes −3𝑚.

= [3 + 8 + (−3)]𝑚 Follow the rules in adding polynomials.

= 𝟖𝒎 Therefore, 3𝑚 − (−8𝑚) − 3𝑚 = 8𝑚.
3. 26𝑎𝑏 − 7𝑏 − (−8𝑎𝑏) = __________ Apply CCC in the given.
Solution:
26𝑎𝑏 and 8𝑎𝑏 are similar terms, hence, they can be
26𝑎𝑏 − 7𝑏 − (−8𝑎𝑏) = 26𝑎𝑏 + (−7𝑏) + 8𝑎𝑏 combined.
= (26𝑎𝑏 + 8𝑎𝑏) + (−7𝑏)
Follow the rules in adding polynomials.
= (26 + 8)𝑎𝑏 − 7𝑏 Since there are no more terms that can be combined
= 𝟑𝟒𝒂𝒃 − 𝟕𝒃 further, the answer is 34𝑎𝑏 − 7𝑏.
4. (8𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 3) − (−2𝑥 2 + 11) = ____ The minuend and subtrahend both have more than one
Solution: term. In this example, it is more convenient to solve
8𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 3 vertically.
− (− 2𝑥 2 + 11)
Write the polynomials vertically just like in addition.
2
8𝑥 + 4𝑥 − 3 Copy the minuend.
+ ( 2𝑥 2 − 11) Change the operation to addition.
𝟐
𝟏𝟎𝒙 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏𝟒 Change the sign of all the terms in the subtrahend.
Follow the rules in adding polynomials.
5. Subtract (3𝑥 2+ 5𝑥 − 3) from the
sum of (−𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 − 𝑥)𝑎𝑛𝑑
(2𝑥 4 − 4𝑥 3 + 10).
Solution:
− 𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 − 𝑥
+ 2𝑥 4 − 4𝑥 3 + 10 First, get the sum of the two polynomials.
2𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 10

2𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 10 Second, subtract 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 3from 2𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 10.

−( 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 3) Remember CCC.

2𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 10
+( − 3𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 3) Simplify by applying the rules in adding polynomials.
𝟐𝒙𝟒 − 𝟓𝒙𝟑 + 𝟓𝒙𝟐 − 𝟔𝒙 + 𝟏𝟑
6. What is 9𝑥 2 + 2 less than It is important to understand which is the minuend and
−2𝑥 + 16? the subtrahend. In this example, the minuend is −2𝑥 +
16 while the subtrahend is 9𝑥 2 + 2.
Solution:
−2𝑥 + 16 − 2𝑥 + 16 Write the polynomials vertically ensuring that similar
−(9𝑥 2 + 2) + (−9𝑥 2 − 2) terms are on the same column.
𝟐
−𝟗𝒙 − 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏𝟒
Do CCC.
Simplify by applying the rules in adding polynomials.
