of the cloth after 6𝑚 + 8𝑝 meters have been cut?
From your previous lessons, you have learned the fundamental operations involving real numbers
and the correct order of operations, commonly known as PEMDAS or GEMDAS (Parentheses/
Grouping, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) rule.
To further check your readiness for this lesson, simplify the following:
A B C
12 + 8 = _____ 12 − 8 = _____ 8 + 82 ÷ 8 = ____
12 + (−8) = _____ 12 − (−8) = _____ 2 + 2 × 2 − 22 = _____
−12 + 8 = _____ −12 − 8 = _____ 5 − 5(5 + 5) + 52 = _____
−12 + (−8) = _____ −12 − (−8) = _____
Check your answers here:

can be combined with.
2. (8𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 3) + (−2𝑥 2 + 11) = __________
Notice that the opposite terms 3𝑥 2and −3𝑥 2 . Opposite numbers when added will result to zero.

C. MASTER LEVEL
Remember
1. In evaluating algebraic expressions for given values of the variables, apply the substitution
property by replacing the variable of the given value.
2. In adding polynomials, keep in mind that only similar or like terms can be combined. To add
polynomials, combine similar terms by adding the numerical coefficients and affix the literal
coefficient.
3. In subtracting polynomials, apply CCC (Copy the minuend, Change the operation to addition,
and Change the sign of the subtrahend), then proceed in adding polynomials.
