What I Need to Know
An ALGEBRAIC EXPESSION is an expression that contains numbers, operations and one or
more variables.
POLYNOMIALS are algebraic expressions that involve the fundamental operations such as
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It can be written in the form of
where a0, a1, a2,…, an are constants, an0 an n is a non-negative
integer exponents of variable. In other words, polynomials only contain positive integral exponents.
Learning Objective
To demonstrate understanding on evaluating algebraic expressions for given values of the
variables
To perform addition and subtraction of polynomials
To assess students’ understanding on (a) evaluating algebraic expression and (b) addition and
subtraction of polynomials

What Is It
LESSON 1.3 EVALUATING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
An algebraic expression is useless until one determines its values or the
number it represents. The process of finding the value of an algebraic expression
is called evaluation, or evaluating of algebraic expression. There are at least two
steps in evaluating an algebraic expression.
Steps in Evaluating Algebraic Expression:
1. Substitute the given value for the variable.
*Substitution is the process of replacing the variable by its given value.
2. Perform the indicated arithmetic following the order of operations or PEMDAS Rule
*Recall:
Examples:
1. 2x2-4, when x=4
2(4)2-4 Substitute x=4
2(16)-4 Exponent
32-4 Multiply
28 Subtract
2. 4xy, when x=6 and y=2
4(6)(2) Substitute x=6 and y=2
48 Multiply
3. 6x-5y, when x=3 and y=1
6(3)-5(1) Substitute x=3 and y=4
18-5 Multiply
12 Subtract
Activity 1. EVALUATE! (Individual Activity)
Evaluate the algebraic expression at each specified value of the variable then simplify.
1. 5x-2

3. 5t

4. 22x+2x-3
a. x= -5 b. x=3 c. x=9
2
5. 3q -2q

LESSON 1.4 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF
POLYNOMIALS
A. Addition
-To add polynomials, we simply add any like/similar terms.
*Recall: The sum of two positive numbers is positive
The sum of two negative numbers is negative
The sum of two integers with unlike sign is their difference together with the sign of the
number with greater absolute value.
Steps to Add Polynomials:
1. Group like terms
*Like/similar terms are terms whose variables and exponents are the same.
2. Perform the indicated operation/ Simplify
Examples:
1. (9+5x2) + (2x2-8)
5x2+2x2 + 9-8 Group like terms together
7x2+1 Perform the indicted operation
2. (3x2+5x-1) + (4x2-2x)
3x2+4x2+5x-2x-1 Group like terms together
7x2+3x-1 Perform the indicated operation
B. Subtraction
-To subtract polynomials, first reverse the sign of each term we are subtracting (turn “+” into “-“,
and “-“ into “+”) then proceed to the next step.
Steps to Subtract Polynomials:
1. Reverse the sign of each term we are subtracting
2. Group like terms
3. Perform the indicated operations/Simplify
Examples:
1. (4y3-6y+8y2) – (-3y2-7+2y3)
4y3-6y+8y2+3y2+7-2y3 Remove the grouping sign and watch out for the negative sign
4y3-2y3+8y2+3y2-6y+7 Group like terms
2y3+11y2-6y+7 Simplify
2. (3r-5s+6t) – (5s-2r)
3r-5s+6t-5s+2r Remove the parentheses and change the sign of the subtrahend
3r+2r-5s-5s+6t Group like terms
5r-10s+6t Simplify
