GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Read first the activity before you answer.
2. Set up your video camera. Take a video while you are doing the activity.
Make yourself and your set-up visible in the video.
This will serve as proof that you actually perform the activity
You will submit this as one of the outputs.
3. Read thoughtfully the Submission Instructions at the end of this activity

WORK and POWER

INTRODUCTION

The work done in joules by a force acting on an object = force x distance moved by the object
in the direction of the force. The work done = energy transferred.

Work done (J) = force (N) x distance (m)

W = Fxd

The power in watts is the work done per second or the energy transformed per second.

Power (W) = energy/work (J)

time (s)

P = E or W
t t
OBJECTIVE
To calculate the power output

MATERIALS
Stopwatch/timer data sheet
Meterstick pencil/pen
Stairs calculator

PROCEDURE
1. Find the height of the stairs to be climbed. (in meters)
2. Find the mass of the student that will climb the stairs. (2.2 lbs=1 kg)
3. Because the student that will be climbing the stairs against the force of gravity, the
acceleration is 9.8 m/s2.
4. The student must run CAREFULLY up the stairs. Measure and record the time that is needed
to do this.
5. Repeat step #4 three times and take the average of the three trials for the time of the person
doing the climb.
6. Increase your power by repeating steps #1 – #4, by running faster up the stairs.
