INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES: READ THEM NOW!

• Before the exam begins, when you are told to, fill in your name (in calendar style),
Trials number (one digit per box) and the initials of your mathematics master
(one letter per box) in the section above. Do this on both question papers.
• Answer ALL questions, or as many as you have time for.
• You should show all relevant working: marks may be given for working that
shows that you know how to solve the problem, even if you get the answer wrong.
• You must NOT use an electronic calculator for this paper. Use of any electronic
device (such as a calculator, mobile phone, etc) will be deemed cheating: this is a
Bill offence.
• You are not required to use geometrical instruments for this paper.
• No diagram should be assumed to be to scale unless stated.
• The marks available for each question are shown in brackets [ ] at the end of each
question or part of the question.

DO NOT OPEN THE EXAMINATION PAPERS

7. a) Express 126 as a product of prime factors.

[2]

525 can be expressed as a product of its prime factors as shown:

525 = 3 × 52 × 7

8. To estimate the probability associated with the colour of cars passing her
home, Serena observes 2500 cars and records the frequency of each outcome
in the table below.

Colour Blue Red Black Silver Other

Frequency 288 377 651 503 681

Use the data to estimate to two decimals places the probability of a black or
blue car passing.

18. Taha and Mohan are playing a game. They both roll a fair, six-sided die, and
whoever rolls the higher number wins. If the winner rolls a 6, he scores 2 points,
and if the winner rolls less than 6, he scores 1 point. If both players roll the same
number, no one wins a point. By listing the outcomes systematically or
otherwise, find the probability that Taha wins 1 point.

19. I buy sixty-two rectangular paving slabs. All the slabs have the same width, but
some are 80cm long, some are 1.5m long and the rest are two metres long. I
have three fewer 1.5m slabs than 80cm slabs. When laid end to end lengthways,
the sixty-two slabs reach for 100m.

Find the difference between the number of two-metre slabs and the number of
80cm slabs.
