Introduction
Deploying IBM FileNet IDM Desktop supports on thousands of desktops is a major task
in several organizations. It should be ensured that the deployment has no pre-installation
or post-installation errors. IBM FileNet IDM Desktop supports deploying through SCCM
(System Center Configuration Manager). To deploy IDM Desktop through SCCM , the
IDM Desktop installation should first be recorded and then the recorded file could be used
to playback the installation silently through SCCM over thousands of desktops at a single
instance (For record and playback of IDM Installation, refer IDM 4.0.3 Admin Guide).

Especially when deploying to Windows 7 64 bit desktops, Microsoft has recommended

some settings to be followed with IDM 4.0.3 installer. If the recommended settings are not
followed installation through SCCM might result in error code -3. This article describes
two methods of deploying IDM Desktop 4.0.3 on 64 bit environments and the detailed
steps for the same.

Platforms: Windows 7 64bit, Windows 8.1 64bit

Versions of IDM: IDM Desktop 4.0.3
Resolution: There are two methods in which the IDM Desktop 4.0.3 could be deployed
using SCCM. For a successful installation any of these methods could be followed.
Method 1: To run IDM Desktop 4.0.3 on Windows 7 64 Bit or above, through SCCM the
following steps should be followed:
1) Use Remote Desktop Console to login to the SCCM Server and Client
mstsc /v:<machinename> /console
2) Create a package on SCCM server with the following options:
In General tab provide a name for the package

In Data Source tab specify the path for the source files, this path should be an
accessible path

2
Figure.1:

In Data Access tab leave the default settings

In Distribution tab set the Distribution priority to high and the for the rest leave the
default settings

3
Figure.2:

In Reporting tab leave the default settings

In Security tab make sure that only the Domain Administrator is selected with full
permissions

Review the summary screen, and Click on Next and then on Finish

4
3) Under the package you just created, right click on it and select "create program" with
the following options:

Figure.3:

a. Give a name for the program

b. Give a command line for the program that needs to be executed:

i. Ex: C:\Idmdesktop.exe
ii. Assuming that you have IDMDesktop.exe copied to the c drive of the client
machine
iii. Leave the default options for the rest
c. In the Requirements tab select the option "this program can run only on specified
client platforms" and select "All x64 Windows7"

5
Figure.3:

d) In the environment tab, select the program can run "Only when user is logged
on" from the drop down list. In the run mode select "Run with user rights". In the
drive mode select "Run with UNC name"

6
Figure.4:

e) In the advanced tab leave the default settings

f) In the Windows Installer tab leave the default settings

g) In MOM maintenance tab leave the default settings

h) Review the summary page, click on Next and then Finish

4) Create a Collection for Windows 7 64 bit systems

5) Advertise the above program on Windows 7 64 bit systems using the following options:

a) Select the collection you created, right click and select Distribute -> Software

b) Select the package and the program

7
c) Give a name to the advertisement

d) Leave the default settings for Advertisement sub collection and advertisement

e) In Assign the program, select "Yes"

Figure.5:

f) Review the summary and click on Finish

g) Go to Advertisements, and select the advertisement that you just created. Right
click on it and select Properties. In the Schedule tab, make it as a mandatory
advertisement and select "As soon as possible".

8
Figure.5:

Set the sending priority to High, and select the program rerun behavior to "Rerun if
failed previous attempt". In Distribution Points tab select "Download content from
distribution point and run locally" for both slow and fast networks and click on
apply.

Figure.6:

6) Now, login to the client machine using Administrator account thru remote desktop
console by using the following option:

mstsc /v:<machinename> /console

Now you will be able to observe in task manager that the program is running with
Administrator account.

Method 2:
While creating the program for the package, in the command line give the following
command:
IDMDesktop403.exe /v /b"C:\temp".

10
Figure.6:

C:\temp directory will get created and msi file would be stored in this.
This directory should not be deleted after installation. This Method replaces step2 of
Method 1.
Conclusion: After implementing method 1 or method 2,IBM FileNet IDM Desktop 4.0.3
will be successfully deployed on thousands of desktops using SCCM 2007 and SCCM
2012. By adopting method 1, the program runs with logged in user rights (preferably
administrator) and the installation completes successfully. Else the regular "SYSTEM"
user with which the deployment runs will not have access to certain file paths, and the
extraction of the files fails.

By using method 2, we are redirecting the extraction of files to particular folder which
bypasses any access requirements, and deploys IBM FileNet IDM successfully. This
article gives step by step description of different methods to deploy IDM Desktop 4.0.3 on
Windows 7 64bit Operating Systems using Microsoft SCCM 2007 and Microsoft SCCM
2012.
