3.5.3.Set the heaters

The media may not be soft enough at room temperature which may result in wrinkled media
on the printing platen to degrade the printing quality or even scratch the print head. So
printer heaters are needed to make the media soft. Also the heaters can speed up fixing the
ink to media to get better printing quality and dry the printing more quickly. GZM/GZE has
pre, mid, post, extended heaters and thermal fans.

3.6.2. Adjusting negative pressure (GZM)

The printer uses Gongzheng negative pressure recirculation technology (Gntek) to control
ink delivery. There are two negative pressure switches on the carriage as circled below, left
one for ink supply and right one for ink recirculation.

1) Power on the printer and wait until the negative pressure switches display green to red.

2) Press once, “P_1” and set value will display in turn as below.

110 / 121
3) Press and to change the set value. Recommended value for ink supply is
-3.0 and recommended value for ink recirculation is -4.0. Anyway, it depends on many
factors such as environment, printer and print head, so if needed, adjust the values to get
perfect printing.

4) Press to apply your setting, the switch will jump to “P_2”. No need to set it.

5) Press again to finish the setting. Pressure switch will display current pressure. In
the beginning, it may be different from your setting because the whole negative pressure
system needs some time to reach your set value.

111 / 121
3.6.3. Adjusting negative pressure (GZM+&GZC)

GZM+ and GZC use a negative pressure board to control the negative pressure. Below
pictures show the location of it.

GZM+ GZC
Instructions:

Air pressure sensor for printing

Printing negative pressure range -3.0~-4.0kpa and the difference between the printing
negative pressure and recirculation negative pressure, range 0.5~1.5kpa. This means when
you adjust the printing negative pressure, the recirculation negative pressure will be
adjusted accordingly. For example, printing negative pressure is -3.0 and the difference is 1,
the recirculation pressure will be -4.0; if you increase printing pressure to -3.5, the
recirculation pressure will increase to -4.5.

4.1. Print head mounting

Screw#1

Screw#2

Front:

Screw#3 Screw#4

Right side:
The print head mounting is precisely made by CNC to ensure precise print head location.
You only need to loosen the 2 screws on the right side (Screw #3 and Screw #4) and rotate
the Screw #1 and Screw #2 to adjust the angle of the head mounting. Notes: New head
mounting is more precise and doesn't have those screws, you don't need to make
mechanical calibration.

4.2. Mechanical Check

1) Go to Main Menu-Tools- Calibration Wizard in PrinterManager, and then click Next.

127 / 121
1) Only Angle Check and Vertical Check need to be performed.

4.2.1. Angle Check

1) Click Angel Check to check whether all the print heads are in vertical. A test pattern will
be printed on the media as the following.

128 / 121
1) For the angle checking, each color has four lines which should be in alignment. If they
are not in a line as illustrated above, you need to adjust the screws moderately.

Possible test pattern 1:

The test pattern below indicates all the print heads were placed anti-clockwise. Loosen
Screw #3 and Screw #4. Slightly rotate Screw#1 anti-clockwise, rotate the Screw#2
clockwise, and then print a test pattern. Sometimes you need to repeat this procedure for
several times to get a perfect pattern. After then, fix Screw #3 and Screw #4.

129 / 121
Possible test pattern 2:
The test pattern below indicates all the print heads were placed clockwise. Loosen Screw #3
and Screw #4. Slightly rotate Screw#2 anti-clockwise, rotate the Screw#1 clockwise, and
then print a test pattern. Sometimes you need to repeat this procedure several times to get a
perfect pattern. After then, fix Screw #3 and Screw #4.

130 / 121
4.2.2. Vertical Check

Above Angle Check pattern may not be easy to identify. So we recommend you to click the
“Vertical Check” to print the following test pattern to inspect the angle of the print heads. M
is the benchmark in this pattern. One print head contains two colors of channels, M&Y or
C&K. So you just need to inspect the C or K. Below figure is the test pattern.

131 / 121
Possible state 1:
The C/K and M line aren’t in alignment, C/K is lower than M. This means all the print heads
were placed clockwise. Loosen Screw #3 and Screw #4. Slightly rotate Screw#2
anti-clockwise, rotate the Screw#1 clockwise, and then print a test pattern. Sometimes you
need to repeat this procedure for several times to get a perfect pattern. After then, fix Screw
#3 and Screw #4.

132 / 121
Possible state:
The C/K and M line aren’t in alignment, C/K is higher than M. This means all the print heads
were placed anti-clockwise. Loosen Screw #3 and Screw #4. Slightly rotate Screw#1
anti-clockwise, rotate the Screw#2 clockwise, and then print a test pattern. Sometimes you
need to repeat this procedure several times to get a perfect pattern. After then, fix Screw #3
and Screw #4.

133 / 121
4.2.3. Nozzle Check

This pattern is used to check the condition of the print heads during calibration.

4.2.4. Cross Check

This is used to adjust the relative position between front group of heads and back group of
heads. Since the position of the Starfire heads is fixed, so this option is not used.

134 / 121
4.3. Software calibration

Software calibration includess Horizontal (Left, Right, Bi-direction), Step and Vertical.
Sometimes you need to do Step calibration before do “Mechanical Check”.
Notes: When changing the media type, print head height or the ink type, please redo the
software calibration.

4.3.1.Horizontal

Choose the speed model in the drop down list that you are going to set. NOTE: You need to

135 / 121
perform this calibration for each speed mode. Here we take “High Speed 600DPI” for
example.
1) Go to left, and click Print, there will have 32 segments in the test pattern; this is because
each print head have 8 rows of nozzle, so 2 heads version will have 16 segments, 4
heads version will have 32 segments.

Magenta is the benchmark in this pattern. A perfect pattern should have the C , M, Y or K
lines up with Magenta perfectly at “0” position. If not, you need to increase/ reduce the value
respectively according to the position where the C , M, Y, K lines line up with Magenta. For
example, C lines up with Magenta at “-8” position and its value is 15 now, you need to
reduce its value to 7 (15-8=7).
2) Right: After finishing the Left calibration, click Next to do the Right calibration. Just need
to perform same steps as the Left calibration.
3) Bidirection: After finishing above two steps, go to Bidirection and print a test pattern as
the follows.

A perfect pattern should have Magenta lines line up at “0” position. If not, you need to
increase/ reduce the value according to the position where they line up. For example, if they
line up at “-8” position and its value is 15 now, you need to reduce its value to 7 (15-8=7).

4.3.2. Step

1) Before you do step size calibration, you should make sure all the previous calibrations
are perfect. Also you must do the calibration for 1Pass first and then go to multiple pass.

136 / 121
2) Select 1 Pass in the drop-down list and print out a test pattern as follows by clicking
Print.

3) A perfect pattern should have the lines line up at “0” position as above figure. If not, for
example, they line up at “-3” position, enter -3 in the text box “Revise”, and then click

to correct the step size. Base Step size will be also changed accordingly. Click
Next to go to the “Vertical” calibration.

137 / 121
4.3.3.Vertical

This is a software calibration, which is different from the mechanical Vertical Calibration
described above.
1) Click “Print” button, the following test pattern will be printed.

2) Magenta is the benchmark in this test pattern. The other color lines should line up with
Magenta lines at “0” position. If not, you need to increase/ reduce the value respectively
according to the position where the other lines line up with Magenta line. For example,
the Cyan line and the Magenta line at “-1” position and the value in the Cyan text box is 2
now, you need to reduce this value to 1 (2-1=1). Check all the colors and adjust the value
until achieving a perfect pattern as above.

4.3.4.Overlap

This option not used, keep the default value “0” for all the color and click Next.

138 / 121
After then, Click Next, then click Finished to quit Calibration Wizard.
