Materials
- 2.00 mm & 2.50 mm crochet hooks
- 100 % cotton yarn
- A pair of 6 mm & of 8 mm safety eyes
- Tapestry needle and pins
- Polyfiber fill
- A piece of black EVA foam
- Craft glue

Abbreviations (US Terms)

st = stitch
ch = chain stitch
slst = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet

You will need:

One color for his skin, white for his hair and
shirt, black for his suit and a bit of dark grey for
the gloves.
Oh! And a bit of pink to embroider his cheeks.
I use 100% cotton yarn (8/8 - DK Worsted).
You’ll need a piece of EVA foam to make the
sunglasses.

For Choupette, his white cat, you’ll need

fingering yarn (8/4), suitable for a 2 mm
crochet hook, in white and black.

Finished size:
From head to toe, your finished Karl should
measure more or less 22 cm.
Of course, should you choose a different hook
and yarn, final measures will vary…
 Ready? Let’s begin!
Karl is crocheted from his little legs up to his head in rounds…

Leg 1
Start with black…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. to 10. Crochet 12 sc
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends. Set aside.

Leg 2 + Body
Start with black…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12) 18. Crochet *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (30)
3. to 10. Crochet 12 sc Stuff the legs firmly…
19. Change to white (shirt) and, only through
back loops, crochet 30 sc
DON’T BREAK THE YARN… Now we will start 20. and 21. Crochet 30 sc
with the body… 22. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (24)
23. and 24. Crochet 24 sc
Body 25. Crochet *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (18)
11. (This is the tricky part…) Still with leg 2 on Stuff firmly…
your hook, chain 3 and join leg 1 with a sc. 26. to 28. Crochet 18 sc
This will be the new beginning of the following 29. Crochet *1 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (12)
rounds. Place a stitch marker here. Crochet 30. to 33. Crochet 12 sc
further 11 sc all along leg 1. Then crochet 3 sc
on one of the sides of the 3-ch-chain. Now, DO NOT BREAK THE YARN! We will now go on
crochet 12 sc along leg 2 and, finally, 3 sc on with his head…
the other side of the 3-ch-chain. Total stitches:
30 Head
12. Crochet *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 34. Change to the color of his skin and, only
(36) through back loops, crochet 12 sc
13. to 17. Crochet 36 sc 35. Crochet 2 sc in each st (24)
36. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *
(30)
Stuff the neck area firmly…
37. Crochet 2 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *4 sc, 2 sc
in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (36)
38. Crochet *5 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *
(42)
39. and 40. Crochet 42 sc
41. Crochet 31 sc, then, for the nose, a 5-dc
bobble stitch (see instructions) and then 10 sc
(this is approximate. Be sure to align the nose
with the middle of his legs!!!!).
BOBBLE STITCH
In the next stitch, make 5 double
crochet, keeping the last loop of each
stitch on the hook (you’ll need 5
unfinished double crochets). Then slip
stitch into all the 6 loops on the hook.
Continue with the following sc stitches.
STOP! Let’s take a break here and start
crocheting the collar of Karl’s shirt, since it’s
easier to do so without the head interfering…
Place a stitch marker in the loop on your hook,
so it won’t come off and cut the yarn, so the ball
doesn’t bother. We’ll get back to it later…
Collar of the shirt
Turn Karl’s body upside down (unfinished head
down!) and mark the front loop that is right in
the middle of his neck on round 34 of the body
(see light blue pin on the photo below). Insert
the white yarn right in the front loop marked,
and crochet towards the left…
Insert the
white
yarn here…
1. Insert your hook into the front loop marked
in the center, and chain 3. Then crochet 1 dc in
that same front loop where you did the 3-ch.
Now, crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat
* 5 times. Finally crochet one dc in the
last front loop and once again chain 3. Crochet
1 slst into that same front loop to finish.
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Now we will go on with the head…
Go back to where you left and join the color of
his skin…
42. to 50. Crochet 42 sc

Place the safety eyes one round above the nose
(the distance between the eyes is 8 stitches) and
embroider the cheeks with a bit of pink yarn…
51. Crochet *5 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (36)
52. Crochet *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (30)
Start stuffing the head…
53. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (24)
54. Crochet *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (18)
Stuff firmly.
55. Crochet *1 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (12)
56. Crochet 6 decreases (6)
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Little ears
Make two, using the color of his skin…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the
ears to his head.
Hair
Using white yarn…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *
(18)
4. Crochet 1 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *2 sc, 2 sc in
the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 1 sc (24)
5. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *
(30)
6. Crochet 2 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *4 sc, 2 sc in
the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (36)
7. Crochet *5 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *
(42)
8. Crochet *13 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *
(45)
9. to 16. Crochet 45 sc
17. Crochet 1 slst and then *chain 13. Starting
from the second chain from your hook,
crochet 1 sc in each chain stitch, till you reach
the edge of the hair piece again (12 sc). Then
crochet 1 slst*, repeat 4 times to create a
fringe of four hair locks. Now crochet 20 sc to
reach the back of the hair piece. We will now
crochet Karl’s ponytail. IMPORTANT: the
following three hair locks of the ponytail are
done in the same stitch… Crochet 1 slst, *chain
15 ch stitches. Starting from the second chain
from your hook, crochet 1 sc in each stitch, till
you reach the edge of the hair piece again (14
sc), then 1 slst in the same stitch from which
the chain came from*, repeat 3 times ALWAYS
in the same stitch. Ponytail done!
Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to
sew to the head.
Arms
Make two, starting with the color of his skin…
1. Make 2 chain stitches. Crochet 4 sc in the
second chain from hook.
2. Crochet 2 sc in each stitch (8)
3. Change to dark grey (gloves) and, only
through back loops, crochet 8 sc
4. and 5. Crochet 8 sc
6. Change to black (jacket) and, only through
back loops, crochet 8 sc
7. to 17. Crochet 8 sc
No need to stuff the arm…
18. Press the opening with your fingers and
crochet together, with sc, both opposing sides
to close the opening of the tube.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the
arms to the body.
Karl’s Jacket
Using black… IMPORTANT: This jacket is
actually a vest, but together with the arms it
will look like a jacket. It is not crocheted in
rounds or spirals, but in rows…
1. Chain 21 ch stitches. Starting from the
second ch from hook, crochet 1 sc in each ch
stitch (total stitches: 20 sc).
2. Chain 1 and turn. Crochet 20 sc.
3. Chain 1 and turn. Crochet 4 sc. Then chain 6
ch stitches, skip the following 4 stitches and
insert the hook once again to crochet 4 sc.
Now chain another 6 ch stitches, skip again
the following 4 stitches and insert the hook to
crochet further 4 sc.
4. Chain 1 and turn. Crochet 4 sc, 6 sc in the 6-
ch chain, then 4 sc, 6 sc in the second 6-ch
chain and finally 4 sc (24).
5. to 16. Chain 1 and turn. Crochet 24 sc.
DON’T BREAK THE YARN! Chain 1 to turn the
piece 90 degrees clockwise and crochet 16 sc
along the side of the piece, working in the
spaces between rows. When you reach the top
edge, crochet 20 sc in the remaining loops of the
foundation chain. Then chain 1 to turn the piece
90 degrees clockwise again and crochet 16 sc
along the other side of the piece, once again
working in the spaces between rows.
Close, break the yarn and weave in ends.
Karl’s tie
Using black…
1. Leaving a long initial tail (you’ll use it to tie
it around his neck), chain 17 ch stitches. From
the second chain from hook, crochet 1 sc in
each chain (total stitches: 16 sc).
Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to
tie it around Karl’s neck. Set aside.
Sunglasses
Use the template in the last page to cut Karl’s
sunglasses. Trace the outline on a sheet of black
EVA foam, cut it and have it ready to glue to
your doll.
Choupette, the cat
IMPORTANT: You should now change your
hook and start using a 2 mm one with a thinner
yarn (fingering)!
Body + Head
Using white yarn…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *
(18)
4. to 8. Crochet 18 sc
9. Crochet *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (15)
10. Crochet 15 sc
Stuff the body firmly…
11. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (12)
12. and 13. Crochet 12 sc
14. Crochet 2 sc in each st (24)
Stuff the neck area firmly…
15. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat *

Place the safety eyes between rounds 18 and 19
of the head, with a distance of 8 stitches
between them, and embroider the snout with a
bit of pink yarn…
28. Crochet 2 sc, one decrease, *4 sc, one
decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (30)
Start stuffing the head and continue doing so…
29. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (24)
30. Crochet 1 sc, one decrease, *2 sc, one
decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 1 sc (18)
31. Crochet *1 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (12)
32. Crochet 6 decreases (6)
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Ears Tail
Make two, using white yarn… Using white…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc 1. Make 2 chain stitches. Crochet 4 sc in the

No need to stuff… - Sew the tail to the back of the body.
8. Press the opening with your fingers and - Surround the neck with the collar and sew the
crochet together, with sc, both opposing sides ends together.
to close the opening of the tube (4). - Weave in all ends inside the body of the little
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew. cat.
Assembly
- Sew the ears to the sides of the head.
- Place the sunglasses and glue the temples to
Karl’s head, to fix them in place.
- Sew the hair to the head, with the ponytail to
the back. “Comb” the fringe backwards. Tie the
ponytail with a bit of black yarn.
- Sew the arms to the sides of the body.
- Knot the tie around Karl’s neck. With a bit of
dark grey yarn, embroider a little buckle.
- Slip up the vest/jacket through the arms.
- Weave in all ends inside your doll.
