Develop a deeper understanding of the colonial history in a developing country of your choosing by working with a
partner to conduct and synthesize research.

First, choose a developing nation. You can choose any orange or red nation from this map.

Next, discover the history of colonization in the area.

Who lived there (within 1000 years) before being colonized?
Describe the lifestyle (food/homes/technology/weapons/etc.)

Which European or Asian countries explored this region?
What were the results of cultural contact between the different people
groups?

3. Colonization
Was this country colonized during the 16-19th centuries?
Determine where these colonies were located. A map would be the best way
to display this information.

4. Trade and Industrialization


What raw materials were first traded? What was traded in return?
Did the mother country build any factories or railroads (industrialization) in
the colonized country? When did this take place?

5. Slavery
Was slavery ever used there by the mother country, or were they taken and
sold as slaves somewhere else?
Give details about the use, number, years, and treatment of slaves.

6. Motives for imperialism


Does old or new imperialism better describe the mother country’s desire to
colonize this country?
Explain why.

7. Current status
When did this country become independent from their colonizers?
Are they still independent?
