PERFORMANCE TASK

DC GENERATOR

What is a DC Generator?
A direct current (DC) generator is a rotating machine that
supplies an electrical output with unidirectional voltage and
current.

What is the role of DC Generator?

The primary role of a DC generator is to supply electricity by
converting mechanical energy into an electric one. DC
generators are constructed by following Faraday's law of
electromagnetic induction. They have applications in heavy
industries and machinery.

DC GENERATOR
MECHANISM
An AC generator may also be used to
produce direct current (DC) by replacing
the two slip rings with a commutator, a
ring broken into two halves insulated
from each other.
As the armature rotates, alternating
current is induced. However, when a
current is about to change direction at
one-half of a revolution, the rotating
commutator makes contact with the
opposite brushes. This enables the
brushes to maintain the polarity of the
current, making the current flow in only
one direction to the external circuit.

The DC generator consumes the fuel and burns it, producing the mechanical
action of rotation of the armature core or rotor. In turn, the mechanical action
produces a change in the magnetic field of the coil, producing a direct electric
current as electrical energy.
It works on the principle that a voltage is induced in a conductor coil when it
is rotated in a magnetic field. The rate at which the coil rotates in the
magnetic field determines the amount of voltage induced in the coil.
It operates on the principle of Faraday's laws of electromagnetic induction.
According to Faraday's law, whenever a conductor is placed in a fluctuating
magnetic field (or when a conductor is moved in a magnetic field) an EMF is
induced in the conductor.
A DC generator has a field winding and an armature winding. The EMF
induced in the armature winding of a DC generator is alternating and is
converted into direct voltage using a commutator mounted on the shaft of the
generator.
It is categorized into three types based on the field excitation methods:
Permanent Magnet DC generators, Separately Excited DC generators, and
Self-Excited DC generators.
