WILLY (Popper) Project

Introduction
{Hint: Lab question, equations being used, and course domains and how you met them

What can we do to our popper to change how high it pops? We communicated within a scientific
framework by creating a meaningful objective. We executed this experiment by identifying and
recording data. We analyzed and interpreted data by using the appropriate mathematics to
analyze data. We developed and used models by creating a bar graph of the physical situation.
We used mathematics and computational thinking to identify and use appropriate physics
equations when they apply to a given situation. We used the problem solving process to analyze
physical situations. F = ma and V^2=Vo^2 + 2a(x-xo). We used the equation F=ma to calculate
the mass times acceleration of the popper.

Variables (not graded)

{Hint: Independent, dependent, constants - in complete sentences}

The independent variable is the substance the popper is being soaked in, because the
substance changes for each trial. The dependent variable is the height the popper pops to,
because that changes based on what the substance the popper is being soaked in. The
controlled variables are the popper itself and the height of the popper, because that doesn't
change throughout the whole lab.

Hypothesis/Objective
{Hint: this should relate to the lab question. Be sure to explain WHY you think this.}

We thought that adding water, soap, and mud to the popper would change the height it popped
to. We thought this because the popper is very light and springy and that helped it pop high. So
if we changed the light and springy aspects to it, the amount of pop would change.

Materials (not graded)

{Everything you use - be very specific (how many, what size, etc)}

1 Scale
1 piece Parchment paper
1 Popper (WILLY)
1 Phone camera
1 Meter tape (already on the wall)
1 cup of Water
1 cup of Dish soap
1 cup of Mud

Procedure
{Complete, specific, detailed! I should be able to do exactly what you did. There should be a
least one diagram or picture of your set-up with a picture title and description}

This picture is how we set up our spreadsheet

First round: The first thing that we did was set up the spreadsheet. Then we put the popper on
the scale and recorded its weight in kg. Then we went to the meter tape measures on the wall.
Then we had someone sit on the floor and pop the popper right in front of the tape. At the same
time someone with their camera was recording the pop. Then we looked at the recording and
found the measurements at the popper's highest height. Then we recorded that down in our
spreadsheet in meters. We popped the popper 5 times.

Second round: We took the popper and soaked it in a cup of water for 45 seconds. The water
inside the cup did not go past the bottom part (springy part) of the popper. Then we put some
parchment paper on top of the scale to protect the scale from the water. We recorded the
poppers' new weight and put it in the spreadsheet as kg. Then we went outside to the wall and
soaked the popper in the water for 45 more seconds, then popped it in front of the piece of tape.
Same way we did last time. Someone recorded the pop. We looked at the recording, found the
poppers highest height, and put that into the spreadsheet in meters. We repeated the soaking
and popping 5 times.

Third round: We took a cup of water and mixed dish soap inside. We took the popper and
soaked it in a cup of soap water for 45 seconds. The water inside the cup did not go past the
bottom part (springy part) of the popper. Then we put some parchment paper on top of the scale
to protect the scale from the soap water. We recorded the poppers' new weight and put it in the
spreadsheet as kg. Then we went outside to the wall and soaked the popper in the soap water
for 45 more seconds, then popped it in front of the piece of tape. Same way we did last time.
Someone recorded the pop. We looked at the recording, found the poppers highest height, and
put that into the spreadsheet in meters. We repeated the soaking and popping 5 times.

Fourth round: We took a cup of dirt and mixed water inside to make mud. We took the popper
and soaked it in a cup of mud for 45 seconds. The water inside the cup did not go past the
bottom part (springy part) of the popper. Then we put some parchment paper on top of the
scale to protect the scale from the mud. We recorded the poppers' new weight and put it in the
spreadsheet as kg. Then we went outside to the wall and soaked the popper in the mud for 45
more seconds, then popped it in front of the piece of tape. Same way we did last time. Someone
recorded the pop. We looked at the recording, found the poppers highest height, and put that
into the spreadsheet in meters. We repeated the soaking and popping 5 times.

Then we took the information we collected in the spreadsheet and turned it into a graph, to
show our results.

Data and Analysis
{All data tables, graphs, observations, etc go here}
Error Analysis
{What errors existed in the lab, how did you minimize that error, do you trust your data}

We forgot to weigh the popper dipped in the soap water and in the mud on the scale the first
time, so we had to do that later. We also used the same weight for the popper after being
soaked in water, as the same weight for being soaked in soapy water. Even though we only
measured the regular water. We sometimes wiped the ground off after each pop, but
sometimes we didn't. So the surface was inconsistent. Sometimes we would re-do the pop if it
was really bad because you have to put your fingers in the right spot. We did not always have
our fingers in the same spot.

Conclusion
{Hint: Check the lab report notes for the FIVE parts of a good conclusion}

How will the height of our popper change depending on the weight of water, soap, and mud?
Overall The height of our popper changed as the substances on it got heavier, but there was
one unexpected thing. The average for the popper (with the weight of 0.00467kg) being popped
with nothing on it was 1.64m. The average for the popper (with the weight of 0.0063kg) being
popped after being soaked in water was 2.18m. The average for the popper (with the weight of
0.0063kg) being popped after being dipped in soap water was 1.45m. The average for the
popper (with the weight of 0.00739) after being popped after being soaked in mud was 1.27m.
This means that as the weight got heavier after the normal water, the height of the popper went
down. But strangely the normal water went higher than no weight. But in the end our hypothesis
was mostly correct.
