Course 1: Research Methodology – SYLLABUS

I Definition and Objectives of Research: Research – Definition; Concept of 8

Construct, Postulate, Proposition, Thesis, Hypothesis, Law, Principle. Philosophy
and validity of research. Objective of research. Various functions that describe
characteristics of research such as systematic, valid, verifiable, empirical, and
critical approach.

II Types of Research: Pure and applied research. Descriptive research. Qualitative 8

and quantitative approaches. Formulating the Research Problem, Literature
Review, Developing the objectives, Preparing the research design including
sample Design, Sample size.

III Outcome of Research: Relevance, interest, available data, choice of data, Analysis 8
of data, Generalization and interpretation of analysis, Preparation of the Report
on conclusions reached, Testing validity of research outcomes, Suggestions and
recommendations, identifying future scope.

IV Introduction to statistics-I – Meaning, scope and limitations of statistics – Data: 6

types and sources – Organisation and presentation of data: frequency
distribution, tabulation and diagrammatic and graphical presentation - Survey
techniques Bivariate and Multivariate Statistical Analysis

V Introduction to statistics-II Measures of central tendency: Mean, median, mode - 8

Correlation Analysis: Tests of Significance and Covariance - Regression Analysis –
analysis of variance (ANOVA), Test of Hypothesis - steps involved in hypothesis
testing – Methods of hypothesis testing: chi-squired test, t-test and z-test –
Nature and methods non-parametric statistical test. Application of Statistical tools
with SPSS.

VI Management Decision Making & Computer Applications: System approach, 7

decision making under uncertainty and risk: decision tables and decision tree.
Statistical data analysis: generating charts/ graph and other features. Introduction
to tools: Tools used may be Microsoft Excel, Open office, Microsoft Power Point
or similar tools.
