SWK211 - 2022: Problem class 11 on Vibration

Problem 1
A spring is stretched 100 mm by a block with a mass of 5 kg. If the block is displaced 150 mm
downward and given an upward velocity of 1.50 m/s, what would the position of the block be
after 0.25 seconds? Assume positive displacement is downwards.

Problem 2
A 5 kg block is suspended from a spring with a stiffness of 500 N/m. The block is pulled 100
mm downward from the equilibrium position and then released by giving it an upward velocity
of 2 m/s. Determine the amplitude of the movement and write down the movement equation.
Assume positive displacement is downwards.

Problem 3
A cable that elongates 30 mm when subjected to a 3 kN load is used to move a safe with a
mass of 800 kg. The safe is being lowered as a velocity of 5 m/s when the cable suddenly
jams. Determine the maximum tension in the cable.

Problem 4 r=0.25m
k=2000N/m

An 5 kg block is suspended from a chord that passes O

over a 10 kg disk. Determine the natural period of 1
vibration for the system. 𝐼0 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐 = 𝑚𝑟 2
2

5 kg 𝐼 = ∫ 𝑟 2 𝑑𝑚

Problem 5

A disk with a mass of 9 kg is pinned at the centre. As indicated in

the sketch, the disk supports a block A with a mass of 3 kg and you
can assume that there is no slip at the contact surfaces. Determine
the natural period of vibration of the system.
1
𝐼0 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐 = 𝑚𝑟 2 𝐼 = ∫ 𝑟 2 𝑑𝑚
2
Problem 6
The 10 kg rectangular plate in the figure is
1 suspended at its centre from a rod with a
𝐼0 = 𝑚 (𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 ) torsional stiffness k = 2.5 N/rad. Determine the
12
natural period of vibration of the plate when it is
given a small angular displacement in the plane
of the plate.

Problem 7
A disk with a mass of 20 kg is pinned at the centre.
As indicated in the sketch, the disk supports a block
with a mass of 5 kg and you can assume that there
is no slip at the contact surfaces. Determine the
natural period of vibration of the system.
1
𝐼0 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐 = 2
𝑚𝑟 2 𝐼 = ∫ 𝑟 2 𝑑𝑚

Problem 8

Determine the maximum period of vibration of the disk with

radius r and mass m that is clamped at point A.

1
𝐼0 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐 = 2
𝑚𝑟 2 𝐼 = ∫ 𝑟 2 𝑑𝑚
