Background
Background Power-to-Hydrogen Coupling
Ø China has a huge green hydrogen production Ø The UAE is the first country in the Middle East

the entire industry chain.
Ø The "Mid- and Long-term Plan for the
Development of Hydrogen Energy Industry Ø The UAE’s goal is to reduce carbon emissions

Background
Background Green Hydrogen Utilization

Ø In 2020, hydrogen consumption in China was 33.42 million tons, with 37% used for
ammonia production, and 19% for methanol production. To meet the global target of
limiting the temperature rise to 2.0 ℃ by 2050, 29% of global ammonia/nitric acid
capacity and all incremental capacity must be replaced by green electricity
Ø Flexible green hydrogen production can absorb renewable energy, and its utilization in
the chemical industry can create a versatile multi-energy system for de-carbonization

Background Green Hydrogen Supply Chain

Ø A survey of hydrogen demand in the chemical industry in the western Inner Mongolia

Background
Background Demand for Green P2H

Ø Renewable energy-based hydrogen production is transitioning from theory to practice. Both

domestic and international projects are reaching their construction peak.
Ø Driven by economic cost considerations and policy incentives, weakly-grid-connected or
off-grid hydrogen production using 100% renewable energy is the future trend.

EU requires 100% renewable

Typical green hydrogen and chemical Inner Mongolia requires that the power generation for
demonstration projects in China and annual power transaction to the hydrogen production
international external grid should not exceed 20% 13
Background
Background Power-to-Hydrogen Coupling

Ø To achieve the large-scale integration of green hydrogen with renewable energy, a

comprehensive study is needed, covering topics like control of electrolysis equipment
and large-scale hydrogen plants, flexible green hydrogen-based chemistry, and
planning, operation, and control of grid-connected or off-grid power systems.

Modeling Technological Requirements

Ø Due to limitations in the efficiency and safety of low-voltage high-current DC grid topologies,
an off-grid AC P2H system based on energy storage grid-forming is proposed
Ø The challenge lies in appropriately configuring and controlling power sources, P2H,
hydrogen loads, and energy storages to ensure the safety and cost-effectiveness of
