EXPERMENT !

VIEASURENENT OF CORE TEMPERATURE OF WALL/ROOF

AIM:

To measure the internal temperature of external wall/roof using a K-type thermocouple device
and compare with values calculated theoretically.

THEORY:

Thermocouple is a device that works on the principle of Seebeck effect. Thermocouples are made
by welding two different metals. When the two welded junctions of a thermocouple is kept at two
different temperatures, an electric current is developed due to thermoelectric effect. This was
discovered by Thomas Johann Seebeck in 1821, later on known as Seebeck effect.

This principle is used to determine the temperature inside an external wall/roof. The K-type
thermocouple is used for the experiment. The needle probe of the thermocouple is planted inside
the hole that is made on the wall. The temperature is directly read on the digital display of the
equipment.

INSTRUMENTS REQUIRED:

A
Thermocouple with needle probe and the Power Supply Unit.

EXPERIMENT:

The experiment is to find the internal temperature of external wall/roof - (i) exposed to the sun
and (ii)protected from the sun.
PROCEDURE:

An externalwall/roof that is exposed to direct sun is identified for the study. The needle probe of
the thermocouple is kept inside the hole that is drilled into the wall/roof. The temperature is read
from the digital display of the instrument. Readings are thus taken at an interval of 5 minutes
over a period of 60 minutes. The experiment is repeated for another external wall/roof that is

protected from the direct sun. A graph is plotted with the time of the day (on X axis) and the
surface temperature (on Y axis) to show the variation in temperature over time. A comparison is
thus made between the two external walls that are exposed to different conditions.

In order to compare the results obtained from the experiment with theoretical value, the inner
temperature of the wall/roof at a depth (equal to that of the hole used for conducting the
experiment) is calculated using the standard procedure mentioned in books (e.g., The graphical
method given in "Manual of Tropical Housing and Building by OHKoenigsberger")
Instructions:
a. Give a neat sketch of the Instrument and the experiment setup.
b.Plot the graph between time of the day and temperature using appropriate scale.
c. Compute the value of core temperature theoretically at a depth equal to that of the hole (used
for the study) using standard procedure mentioned in books.
d. Discuss the findings by comparing the results obtained.

OBSERVATIONS:

1 Depth of the hole (Case 1) : cm.

2 Depth of the hole (Case 2): Cm.
