Tutorial 1 Part A: Work, Energy and Power

1. Find the work done when a body of mass 3.5 kg is raised through a vertical distance of 6 m
under constant speed. (205.8 J)
2. A block of wood is pulled 4m across a horizontal surface against resistances with force of 7.5
N as shown in figure 1. If the block moves at a constant velocity, find the work done of the
resistance. (-30 J)

Figure 1

3. A man building a wall lifts 50 bricks through a vertical distance of 3 m at constant speed. If
each brick has mass of 4 kg, how much work does by the man against gravity? (-5880J)

4. A box is pulled with 12 N force with a distance of 20 m across a horizontal surface against
friction force with a net work done of 160 J. If the body moves with uniform velocity, find
the work done of friction force. (80J)
5. A horizontal force pulls a body of mass 5 kg a distance of 8 m across a rough horizontal
surface, coefficient of friction 0.25. The body moves with uniform velocity and the only
resisting force is that due to friction. Find the work done of the frictional force. (-98J)

6. In building a section of wall, a man must lift 500 bricks a vertical distance of 150 cm. Each
brick has a mass of 2 kg and the man completes the section in 5 minutes. Find the man’s
average rate of working. (49 W)
