DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Description
A. Introduction
This section contains the physical description and operation for the XL245 Emergency
Battery System.
B. XL245 Emergency Battery System Description
(1) The XL245 series of emergency batteries provide emergency backup DC power to
avionics and lighting systems on fixed wing turbojet and similar aircraft types. The
XL245 series consist of twenty-four, 2.5 Ah lead acid batteries with two temperature
sensors located in the battery assembly.
(2) Individual batteries are configured in a series/parallel combination to yield a 24 V,
5.0 Ah battery. The built-in charging system can recharge a discharged XL245
battery to 80-90% energy level in 90 minutes.
(3) The charge management system maintains the battery in a charged state whenever
bus power is supplied to the unit. The operator does not need to cycle aircraft
electrical power to induce the unit to charge. Cycling power to the XL245 is not
recommended.
(4) The XL245 series emergency batteries are designed for minimum maintenance. The
XL245 does not need to be removed from the aircraft for any reason except for an
outright failure, or preventative maintenance battery replacement. See Figure 1.

(2) The charge management system can recharge a discharged battery to 80 - 90%
energy level in 90 minutes, providing the aircraft 28 VDC system is capable of
furnishing an initial current of 8 amps.
(3) Twenty-four, 2.5 ampere hour lead-acid batteries provide 18 to 24 VDC at 3.5
amperes for a minimum of one hour, or 5 amperes for 40 minutes.
(4) The XL245 series is capable of providing a battery output of 18-24 VDC at 3.5
amperes for 60 minutes or 5 amperes for 40 minutes. See Figure 4.
(5) Figure 4 shows typical output curves for constant 3.5 and 5.0 Amp discharges of a
fresh battery. A battery is considered at the end of service life when it is unable to
drive a 5-ampere load for more than 40 minutes.

(6) Charge Method
a. The emergency battery charger ensures that the XL245 internal batteries are
always maintained at their full capacity while minimizing temperature fatigue
cycles. Charge control is automatic and turns on as soon as aircraft power is
available. The charge method has three modes of operation:
1 Bulk Charge Constant Current Mode
2 Bulk Charge Constant Voltage Mode
3 Temperature Compensated Trickle Charge
b. The XL245 series uses constant voltage charging techniques to recharge the
battery pack. The battery pack draws current in proportion to the voltage
difference between the battery and applied power source.
c. The charge mode is determined on a real-time basis as a function of the battery
voltage (constant current mode) and charge current required by the batteries
(constant voltage mode). The interaction of these charge modes is described in
the charging algorithm in Figure 5. The Temperature Compensated Trickle
Charge curve is shown in Figure 6.
(7) Connector Pin Assignments
The J1 pin out assignments are shown in Table 2.

b. DC-to-DC Converter, Battery Charger
1 Central to the charge management system is the DC-to-DC converter.
Batteries are charged whenever the aircraft bus applies 28 VDC to the
converter. The three charge modes (constant current, constant voltage, and
trickle charge) are described in Figure 5.
2 The XL245 series contains a circuit that allows the battery output to appear
at pin C of the input connector. Falcon Jet airplanes have a test circuit which
grounds an aircraft relay that is connected to the input to initiate a load test
of the battery pack output.
NOTE: When using the XL245 series in non-Falcon Jet aircraft
applications, it is highly recommended to install a series diode at
the 28 VDC bus input (J1 pin C) to block this output signal when
28 VDC bus is absent. See Figure 2.
c. Power FET Solid State Cutoff Switch
To prevent the batteries from being deep discharged, and to prevent the risk of
sulfiding and a short life, the battery output is cut off at 18 VDC. This cut off
point is consistent with 96-98% energy removal, thus there is negligible energy
loss sacrificed for the significant increase in battery reliability.

CAUTION: IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING AN EMERGENCY POWER TOTAL

DISCHARGE, 28 VDC POWER MUST BE PROVIDED TO THE
XL245 TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY. THE BATTERIES DO NOT
REQUIRE A COOL DOWN PERIOD PRIOR TO RECHARGING (AS
MAY NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERY TECHNOLOGY) AFTER
USAGE.
NOTE: If the XL245 battery will not take a charge after being left discharged,
the batteries may have become sulfided. The indication of this is that
the batteries will not accept a full charge. Securaplane does not
warranty damage due to sulfiding.
d. Twenty-four 2.5 Ah Cells
1 The XL245 contains twenty-four 2.5 Ah lead acid batteries with two
temperature sensors located in the assembly. Individual batteries are
configured in a series/parallel combination to yield a 24V, 5.0 Ah battery.
2 The charge management system maintains the battery in a charged state
whenever bus power is applied, and can recharge a discharged XL245
battery to an 80-90% energy level in 90 minutes.
e. Mid Battery Voltage
Mid battery voltage is applied to the bus via J1- D. A current limiting device
protects the unit from an over-current on the mid-battery voltage output.
f. Charger On
The CHARGER ON function monitors the charge voltage from the DC-to-DC
converter to ensure that the charging circuit has not failed. The CHARGER ON
LED illuminates if the charging circuit is functioning properly when input bus
voltage is applied.
g. Energy Level Test Switch
When the front panel momentary pushbutton ENERGY LEVEL TEST SWITCH
is depressed, an internal test load is placed across the battery for five seconds
to check the battery’s energy level.
NOTE: The battery energy level test will be more accurate when the XL245
has been off of charge for at least two hours.
1 Two front panel LEDs indicate the energy level remaining in the battery. An
energy level above 65% is indicated as a green BATTERY OK LED for the
duration of the test, whereas an energy level at or below 65% is indicated as
red BATTERY LOW LED.
2 Because the internal load is thermally protected, the unit will not allow a
Level Test if the load temperature exceeds 80C. A Level Test can be
performed as many as three times in a row, before time must be allowed for
the load to cool down.

(9) Charger Protection
a. Charger Converter Temperature Protection
The converter is turned off (paused) when the charger converter temperature is
greater than 75C and is cycled back on again when the temperature falls below
70C.
b. Over-Voltage Protection
Proper recharge of SLA batteries requires returning 110 percent of the energy
used during discharge. This approach overcomes the problem of the batteries
“cycling-down” over time. The XL245 charge algorithm causes the battery
terminal voltage to rise to 30.5 VDC in order to return this excess energy to the
batteries. Voltage-limiting buffer circuits ensure that the output voltages do not
exceed 25 VDC during charging.
(10) Battery Protection
a. Battery Over-Temperature Protection
When the battery temperature reaches 60C, the charging process pauses.
Charging resumes when the battery temperature drops below 60C.
b. Battery Low Voltage Cut-Off Switch
A solid state battery Cut-Off Switch is incorporated in the battery output line to
prevent over-discharge of the battery. This switch removes the load from the
battery when the voltage drops below 18 VDC. It will re-apply the load to the
battery if the aircraft input bus is re-applied to the battery.
c. Battery Over-Current Protection
Circuit breaker(s) protect the batteries from an over-current on the +24 VDC
output(s). An electronic current sense circuit protects the batteries from output
short circuits.
d. 28 VDC Bus Test Output
The battery output appears at pin C of the input connector. Falcon Jets have a
test circuit which grounds an aircraft relay connected to the input to initiate a
battery pack output load test.
NOTE: When using the XL245 series in non-Falcon Jet aircraft, it is highly
recommended to install a series diode at the 28 VDC bus input (J1 pin
C) to block this output signal when 28 VDC bus is absent. See Figure
2, Note 5.

3. Test Procedures
A. Steps
(1) Do all tests with the test unit at ambient pressure and temperature, unless otherwise
specified by an individual test procedure.
a. Temperature: 60 to 100F (15.5 to 37.8C)
b. DC Input Voltage: 28  0.5 VDC
(2) Regularly examine and certify instrument accuracy/calibration in accordance with
applicable government and commercial specifications.
(3) Visually inspect the unit for signs of missing, broken, bent or cracked parts.
Damaged parts must be replaced before the unit is tested.
(4) The Securaplane XL245 Emergency Battery does not need to be removed from the
aircraft to perform energy level testing or to check charger status. Battery energy
level testing is integrated into the Battery Energy Level Test and LEDs.
(5) Securaplane considers four years to be the maximum life span for the XL245
internal batteries. If the batteries remain fully discharged longer than two days,
capacity may fall below 65 per cent and require a special recharge procedure only
available from Securaplane.
(6) It is in the customer’s best interest to replace the internal batteries in the fourth year
as a preventative maintenance activity, thus preventing possible unscheduled
maintenance activity as the probability of battery failure increases with time.
(7) The XL245 uses 24 lead acid batteries in a series-parallel configuration. Unlike
Ni-Cad batteries, lead acid batteries can exist in a float environment with no
maintenance required, and no memory (voltage depression) problems.

C. Battery Energy Level Test Procedure
NOTE:  It is recommended that the battery energy level be performed at least
once a year. If the unit fails the Battery Energy Level Test, recharge the
unit and repeat the test.
 The XL245 series of emergency batteries are designed for on-aircraft
battery energy level testing.
(1) Engage CB1 and CB2 for XL245–C and –D models.
NOTE:  Ensure that the XL245 has had maximum charging prior to testing.
This would be assured if the 28 VDC had been ON for two hours.
 The battery should sit, with the 28 VDC feeding the XL245 OFF, for
greater than one hour (accuracy increases with time) in an ambient of
65 to 90F, directly after the charging described above.
(2) Depress the ENERGY LEVEL TEST SWITCH on the front of the XL245. At the end
of five seconds, a green BATTERY OK or red BATTERY LOW LED will be
illuminated. The colors indicate:
a. Green - approximately 65-100 percent of as new capacity remains
b. Red - approximately 0-65 percent of as new capacity remains
(3) If a red LED indicator is illuminated, continue to the Charging Procedure.
(4) If a green LED indicator is illuminated, no further tests are required.
D. Charging Procedure
(1) Connect the 2-wire bench charge harness to J1-C (+28 VDC) and J1-B (GND).See
Figure 1001.
(2) Connect the other ends of the wires to the 28 VDC supply and ensure correct
polarity. Do not turn the supply on at this time.
NOTE: If an ammeter is not included on the 28 VDC supply, connect an ammeter
in series with the +28 VDC lead (5 Amp capability).
(3) Adjust the power supply to 28.5 ± 0.5 VDC.
(4) Turn the power supply on and note the input current. A low battery will cause up to
5.0 Amps of input bus current to flow. Allow the battery to charge until the input bus
current is less than 300 mA.
(5) Turn the power supply OFF and disconnect the 2-wire bench charge harness.
(6) After charging the XL245, pull CB1 and CB2 and allow it to sit for 8 to 24 hours.
(7) After 8 to 24 hours, engage CB1 and CB2 and perform a capacity check using the
ENERGY LEVEL TEST SWITCH or for more accuracy proceed to the Capacity
Discharge Test.
(8) If the unit does not successfully complete the Battery Energy Level Test, return the
XL245 Emergency Battery System to Securaplane Technologies.

(1) Remove the 28 VDC input for the duration of the test.
(2) Connect the 3.8 ohm load resistor between XL245 connector J1-A (+24 VDC
output) and J1-B (GND). It is acceptable to substitute an electronic 5 Amp constant
current load for the resistor.
(3) Connect a voltmeter/ohmmeter across the load. (If using constant current load,
integral voltmeter may be used.)
(4) Use a stop watch and begin timing.
(5) Allow the XL245 to discharge until the battery output is cut off.
CAUTION: IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE CAPACITY DISCHARGE TEST,
RECHARGE THE BATTERY. PERFORM THIS CHARGING
PROCEDURE EVEN IF THE UNIT DID NOT PASS THE REQUIRED
TIME TEST. IT IS NOT ADVISABLE TO ALLOW BATTERIES TO SIT
DISCHARGED.
(6) An elapsed time of 40 minutes is the standard for a new battery (less than one year
old). A unit in service longer than one year should run for 32 minutes under load.
(7) If the XL245 does not drive the load for the time listed above, return the XL245
Emergency Battery System to Securaplane Technologies.
