What are we learning today?

1. To learn about the painter Édouard Manet , his background


and what was going on in the world at the time he was
creating his work.

2. To follow along the presentation and fill in the sentences or


words that will be highlight in RED in the presentation into
the gaps that will be on your mind map. You will be filling this
out as we go.

3. Create a A5 drawing of Paris in the 1850’s to stick into you


notes so you will know the time period that Édouard Manet
was living in.

4. You will be learning about Édouard Manet painting


“Olympia, 1863” in great detail.
Who was Édouard Manet?

● He was a French artist born in 1832.

● He came from a conservative family,


and his father wanted him to pursue a
career in law however Manet had a
passion for art and wanted to become
an artist.

● Manet studied art in Paris, but he was


dissatisfied with the academic
approach to art and often clashed with
his instructors.
Who was Manet
influenced by?

● He was influenced by his teacher and


mentor for a short period of time - in the
early stages.

● Couture's academic training provided


Manet with the knowledge of
traditional artistic techniques, such
as drawing, composition, and color
theory.

● Couture's teaches on technical skills


and the importance of anatomy and
influenced Manet's early works.
Realism

● Realist artists painted things as they appeared in reality,


with attention to detail.

● Realism try to capture everyday life and everyday people


using a lot of detail and very realistic colours.

● Tries to represent what is truly being seen in a


composition.

Impressionist Movement

Édouard Manet is often considered a bridge


between Realism and Impressionism.

It was a movement that captured the fleeting effects of
light and color in the natural world.

treatment

● Crime: Common types of crimes in Paris


during the 1800s included theft, robbery,
pickpocketing, and burglary.
But finally there was
a change…
● Haussmannization: The large-scale urban renewal
project, one of the most significant developments
in Paris during the 1850s.

● Modernised and transformed Paris into a more


orderly and functional city

● New urban landscape, new bridges and new


architecture.

● New investments and businesses

● New jobs created

● Often painted ordinary people, urban scenes, and modern
subjects in his paintings.

● Loose brushwork: Manet's brushwork was bold and


spontaneous.

● Manet's compositions were often bizarre compared to other


work at the time

● He experimented with different kinds of viewpoints.

What is Symbolism?
Symbolism

Symbolism is the idea that things


represent other things.

The nude woman?

The bouquet of flowers?

The pearl bracelet?


The bouquet of flowers: can be interpreted as a gift
symbolising the close relationship between the courtesan
and her client.

The gaze: The confident gaze of the nude woman and the
confident posture of the black servant challenge traditions.

The nude woman: represents female sensuality and independence.

The black cat: symbolises mystery, and superstition- cats were often
associated with femininity.

The pearl bracelet: represents wealth and luxury.
