σxy = 50 MPa, σyz = −100 MPa, σxz = 100 MPa

a. Write the stress tensor

b. Determine the normal and shearing stresses on a plane with unit normal
vector nx i+ny j+nz k, where nx = 2ny = nz , and i, j, k are the unit
vectors along x, y, z axes respectively.

Question 2 The cylindrical pressure vessel with closed ends has a diameter of 480 mm
and a wall thickness of 22.5 mm. The vessel carries simultaneously an in-
ternal pressure of 8.4 MPa, a torque of 150 kN.m, and a bending moment
of 50 kN.m. The yield strength of the material is 280 MPa. Find the factor
of safety against yielding according to
(a) the maximum shear stress theory,
(b) the maximum distortion energy theory.

Question 3 Continuing on examples from your lecture, replace the 10 kN load with
unknown load P , as shown in the figure. Consider two possible sections for
the beam as shown in part (a) and (b). Material of beam is steel that is
assumed to be elastoplastic with E = 200 GP a and σY = 240 M P a.

Figure 3: Figure for question 3.

Calculate and compare the following for both the sections

a. the yield moment or maximum elastic moment

b. the load at which yielding occurs
c. the plastic moment
d. the load associated with plastic moment
e. shape factor

Question 4 The wood beam is reinforced at the bottom by a steel plate of width b =
40mm. If Esteel /Ewood = 20, determine the largest vertical concentrated
load that can be applied at the center of an 18 m simply supported span.
The working stresses are 7.2 MPa for wood and 108 MPa for steel.
