End Semester Examination 2020-21

B. Tech. 8th Semester (Spring), April 2021
Subject: Advanced Mechanics of Solids (CE- 4205)
Full Marks: 50 Duration of Exam: 2 Hours
Answer any two questions from each Group. Each question carries equal marks.

Group A

Q1. The stress components at a point in a plate are σxx = -120MPa, σyy = σzz = 60MPa,
τxy = τyz =10 MPa, and τxz = -100MPa.
1. Determine the principal stresses
2. Determine the direction cosines of the plane of maximum principal stress
3. Find the octahedral shear stress
4. Find the value of the maximum shear stress and compare it to the octahedral shear
stress.

Q2a. State and explain theorem of Least Work.

b. Member ABCD in Fig.1 has a constant cross-section along its length (EI is constant). If the
length is large compared with the depth of the member, find the reaction at the roller
support D using theorem of least work. Also draw BM and SF diagram.

Q3. An external pressure of 10 MN/m2 is applied to a thick cylinder of internal diameter 180 mm
and external diameter 340 mm. If the maximum hoop stress permitted on the inside wall of
the cylinder is limited to 40 MN/m2 , what maximum internal pressure can be applied
assuming the cylinder has closed ends? What will be the change in outside diameter when
this pressure is applied? E = 207 GN/m2 , v = 0.29.

Q4. Write and explain the conditions of compatibility for strain and derive the following
equation

Q5. Find by the unit load method the slope at B of the rigid frame shown in Fig.2. A is a hinged
joint and D is a roller support.

Q7. State and briefly discuss all the six theories of failure giving the mathematical expressions
defining them.

Q8. A rectangular-section beam 80 mm x 50 mm is arranged as a cantilever 1.2 m long and

loaded at its free end with a load of 5 kN inclined at an angle of 300 to the vertical as shown
in Fig. 4. Determine the position and magnitude of the greatest tensile stress in the
section. Take E = 210 GN/m2.
