ME 301 MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES MIDTERM EXAMINATION

Instructions:
1. Use the Activity Sheet Format for handwritten solutions.
2. Show COMPLETE solutions in all the problems.
3. Show FBD’s and Deformation Geometric illustrations properly.
4. Express all required final answers in three decimal places, complete units and box them.
5. Take a clear picture or scan in Portrait Orientation your handwritten solutions.
6. Save as a single PDF file and upload it in the Google Classroom.

1. The rod ABC is made of aluminum for which E = 70 GPa. Force P = 42 kN and Q = 6 kN. Rod
AB is 20 mm in diameter and 0.40 m long while Rod BC is 60 mm in diameter and 0.50 m long.
Determine the deformation in mm of (a) rod AB and (b) rod ABC.

2. The compound bar carries axial loads as shown. Determine the maximum allowable value of P
if the change in length of the entire bar is limited to 0.08 inch and the working stresses listed in
the table are not to be exceeded.
3. A bar having a cross sectional area of 0.50 in2 carries axial loads applied at the positions shown.
Compute the deformation of each segment and the total deformation of the bar. E = 10 x 106
psi. Assume that the bar is suitably braced to prevent buckling. (For the deformation, indicate if
elongation or contraction.)

4. The normal stresses in a steel member are σx = 8 ksi; σy = -4 ksi and σz = 10 ksi. Using E = 29 x
103 ksi and v = 0.3, determine the normal strains in all axes.

5. The polyethylene sheet is subjected to the biaxial loading shown. Determine the elongations of
sides AB and AC. E = 300 ksi and v = 0.4.
6. Two vertical rods attached to the light bar are identical except for the length. Before the load W
was attached, the bar was horizontal and the rods were stress-free. If W = 6600 lbs, determine
the internal load in each of the bar.

7. A water tank 8 m in diameter and 12 m high has an internal pressure of 117.72 kPa.
Determine the minimum thickness of the tank plating if the stress is limited to 40 MPa.

8. A 4-feet inside diameter of steel pipe, 100 feet high, ¼ inch thick, carries oil with a
pressure of 5112 lbs/ft2. Determine the circumferential and longitudinal stresses in the
steel in psi.
