1. a) Draw the stress strain diagram for mild steel and define the various
terms in the diagram. (8)

b) Three steel bars of cross-sectional area 100 cm 2 are arranged and


different magnitude of axial forces is applied as shown in the figure.Find
the final length of arrangement. Take E=2.14 X 108 kN /m2 .(8)

2. a) Differentiate between method of section and method of joint which are


used to analyze the plane truss.(6)
b) Determine the forces in the following member AB , AE , EC and DC
for the given truss below.(12)

3 . a ) Draw axial force diagram ,shear force diagram and bending moment
diagram of the given loaded beam as shown in figure . (10)

b) Derive the relationship between the axial force ,shear force and bending
moment of a determinate structure. (8)

4) a. Derive the formula for deflection of simply supported beam of span ‘L’
having uniformly distributed load w/L over a whole span by double integration
method. (8)

Derive the relation : I =y= R with their usual meaning.

b. A cast iron water pipe 500 mm inside diameter and 20 mm thick is


supported over a span of 10 m . Find the maximum stress in the pipe metal,
when the pipe is running full .Take density of cast iron as 70.6 kN/m3 and that
of water as 9.8 kN/mm3. (8)

What do you mean by section modulus ? Derive the expression for section
modulus for hollow circular section .
A rectangular beam 300 mm deep is simply supported over a span of 4 m.What
uniformly distributed load the beam can carry ,if the bending stress is not to
exceed 120 MPa . Take I = 225 X 10 6 mm4. (4+4)

5. a) Define torsion . Derive an expression for torsional equation .(2+6)

b) A solid shaft is subjected to a torque of 1.6 kN-m .Find the necessary


diameter of the shaft ,if the allowable shear stress is 60 MPa. The allowable
twist is 10 for every 20 diameter length of the shaft . (L=20D). Take G=80 GPa.

6. a) Write down the assumptions in the Euler’s Column Theory. Derive Euler’s
formula .(2+6)

b)Calculate the buckling load for a strut of T-section , the width being 100
mm, overall depth being 80 mm and both flange and stem being 10 mm thick
.The strut is 4 m long and hinged at both ends.Take E =200 GN/m2. (8)
