into a more connected and interdependent place. Globalization also captures in its
scope the economic and social changes that have come about as a result.

interdependence of peoples and countries. It is generally understood to include two
inter-related elements: the opening of international borders to increasingly fast flows of
goods, services, finance, people and ideas; and the changes in institutions and policies
at national and international levels that facilitate or promote such flows.” – world health

John Dewey was a pragmatist, progressivist, educator, philosopher, and social reformer. He felt strongly
that people have a responsibility to make the world a better place to live in Journal of Inquiry & Action in
Education, 9(1), 2017 92 | Page through education and social reform (Gutek, 2014). According to Schiro
(2012), Dewey believed that education was “a crucial ingredient in social and moral development” (p.
174). Dewey’s beliefs and philosophy about education and learning have impacted countless educators
over the years and are woven throughout many learning theories such as progressive education,
constructivism, learner-centered theory, and experiential knowledge, all of which differ from what
Dewey describes as a traditional classroom setting (Dewey, 1938; Schiro, 2012).

He also argued that education should prepare students for life in a democratic society, where
they can participate in social change and innovation. Dewey's educational philosophy was
based on four core principles: utility, interest, experience, and integration.

Illich proposes a system of self-directed education in fluid and informal arrangements, which he
describes as "educational webs which heighten the opportunity for each one to transform each
moment of his living into one of learning, sharing, and caring."
Impact of globalization on education

Globalization has impacted a lot the way we see our world today. We have started
interacting and integrating people, companies and governments worldwide. Since
globalization has changed the world, education is a small yet important part of the
huge nexus that has also gone through some changes. Whether it is positive or
negative is for you to decide.

It improves the student’s ability to acquire and utilize knowledge. Plus, the introduction
of globalization in education has made students great team players who can work
closely in teams, thereby making them ready for the future.

Globalization has a close relation with education. As education has an important

place in shaping a society, globalization has to be connected with education and
the global activities have a deep impact on it. Globalization of the world
economies is leading to increase emphasis on internationalization of the subjects
included in a course of study in school. It also creates the opportunities for new
partnerships in research and teaching with agencies and institutions across the
world. Globalization is one of most powerful worldwide forces that are
transforming the basis of business competition, paradoxically harkening an era
in which small, local communities of practice may lead to a prominent structural
form. Communities of practice impeach organizations to build, share and apply
deeply of competence required to compete in a knowledge-based global
economy.
