Topic 1: Getting Ready To Learn

Making the transition (from school to university)

Making the transition from school to university life is not easy. Additionally, as humans,
we encounter new experiences every day and must adapt to them to showcase our
best selves. There are numerous differences between high school and university
students. For example:

When I was in high school, all students had to adhere to the school uniform. They
didn't have the option to choose their attire. Those who violated the rules faced
consequences. In contrast, at universities, students aren't required to wear uniforms.
They can dress as they please, provided their attire remains formal and modest.
In university life, the scariest thing is choosing friends. It is because friends
give great influence and you must choose who you want to be your friends
carefully. Your friends must have the value.

Characteristics of Succesful student

o Get to Know Your Lecturers. Take a few minutes and stop to talk with your
lecturer before or after class during office hours. Ask a questionn about
the material or check on your progress in the course.

o Attend All Classes. One of the best ways to be successful in college is to

attend all classes

o Work Hard This Semesta. If you want high grades, you need more time to
do your work well.

o Make a good plan of time management.

o Submit all assignment on time.

Learning Styles Inventory

There are three types of Learning Style to enhance performance which are Visual,
Auditory and Kinesthetic. Learning Style Inventory is to help student determine
which learning style they have.

CHARACTERISTIC OF VISUAL, AUDITORY & KINESTHETIC LEARNER.

VISUAL:
Visual learners share most of the same learning characteristics, although not every
visual learner has all of these characteristics. For example, a visual learner often
notices visual details easily, and is less able to take note of details during a verbal
discussion. They may find verbal instructions difficult to remember and follow. Visual
learners often enjoy reading, and may be especially talented at remembering the
proper spelling of words. Teachers can help visual learners succeed by providing them
with graphic organizers, illustrations, or tables.
AUDITORY:
Auditory learners often enjoy class discussions, and they learn the best through
listening and speaking. They may enjoy books on tape or read aloud more than
individual reading, and they may talk to themselves while reading. In fact, an auditory
learning may gain from speaking through a thought process in order to make a
decision or come to a conclusion. Many auditory learners excel in public speaking or
in persuasion, and they benefit from a teacher who speaks a lot, rather than simply
writing information on the note.
KINESTHETIC:
Kinesthetic learners learn through their sense of touch, as well as through physically
doing things. Because of this, kinesthetic learners may struggle with reading, which is
primarily a visual skill. They may seem anxious or fidgety in many learning situations,
tapping their feet, pencils, or anything else around. Kinesthetic learners often learn
best through doing hands-on experiments and activities, doing demonstrations, and
physically moving as they study. Many kinesthetic learners “talk with their hands,”
using gestures or motions to get their point across.
We student have our own different types of learning style, so do I. My learning style
is more to Visual learners.

Topic 4: Time Management & Organizational Skills

Time is very precious. We as a students have to use our time as wisely as we can.
We always tend to say we still have a lot of time to finish our assignments but in
reality we’re not. So, we have to manage our time correctly so we can study, do
assignments and do other tasks at the right track. The KEY to not waste time is DO
NOT PROCRASTINATE!

Fixed-Commitment Calendar
Commitment also one of the KEY towards success. We have to be discipline and
follow our schedule to not waste time. With the help of this timetable, it will guide us
to done our tasks properly. Here is my fixed commitment calendar:

Topic 5: Memory, Learning & Improving Concentration

Memory

WHAT IS MEMORY?
Memory is the ability to save and remain the information and experience.

3 TYPES OF MEMORY:

➢ Sensory memory – numerous incoming information form 5 sense will be

stored in sensory memory for an instant.
➢ Short-term memory- our short term memory have only limited storage. The
information must be repeated in order to get information to long-term
memory.

➢ Long-term memory- our long term memory is unlimited and have large
storage. If the information is not being used for long term time, the
information will be lost.

\
MEMORY STRATEGIES:

Memory strategies really help students to organize, focus and recall every single
information that they need to retain.

➢ WRITE IT DOWN – write notes in your phone / make checklists.

➢ ASSOCIATION – relate new information to something you already know well.
➢ REPETITION – reading, writing, or saying information over and over can
help move information to long-term memory
➢ CATEGORIZATION – make group related items together.
➢ ROUTINE – having a routine makes you less reliant on your memory

What is Concentration?

Concentration is an attentional process that involves the ability to focus on the task
at hand while ignoring distractions.

REASONS OF POOR CONCENTRATION

• Poor nutrition
• Sleep deprivation
• Symptoms of depression
• Lack of knowledge makes students less interested to focus on the lecture
• Struggle to understand the lecture
• Unhealthy lifestyle
STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE CONCENTRATION

• Eat a balanced diet

• Create a quality timetable to manage your time correctly
• Calming yourself down first and do something you love. If these method does not
work out, refer to the counsellor
• Participate in class and become an active learner to gain more knowledge
• Always ask the questions of your lecturer until you fully understand what is the
lecture about
• Exercise regularly

Reading / study System (SQ3R)

SQ3R is a reading comprehension method named for its five steps: survey, question,
read, recite, and review.

SURVEY
Gather the information necessary to focus and formulate goals

QUESTION
Help your mind engage and concentrate
READ
Fill in the information around the mental structures you've been building

RECITE
Retrain your mind to concentrate and learn as it reads

REVIEW
Refine your mental organization and begin building memory

Activities

Topic 6: Taking Lecture Notes

Why take lecture notes?

• Promotes Active Listening

• Provides an Accurate Record of Information
• Helps you Organize the information
• Provides Additional Repetition

* Ultimately, learning and practising effective strategies for how to take lecture notes
will help you become a more successful student.
How to take lecture notes?

o PREPARE BEFORE TAKING NOTES

>> Focus your attention physically by sitting up and making eye contact with the
speaker
>> Listen with an open mind, setting aside your own biased
>> Listen for the main points and related details as well as taking notes
>> Monitor your listening. Check with the lecturer or a classmate (at the end of
the lecture) if you are unsure of some of the information.

Effective Note-taking System

o Two Column Method

o Outlining Method

o Mapping Method
o Sentence Method

Topic 7: Academic Integrity & Performance

Many students nowadays are dependent on each other. Some are for their own good
but some are only using their friends to ease their work and assignments leading to
plagiarism.
WHAT ARE PLAGIARISM?

➢ Turning someone else’s work as your own

➢ Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
➢ Failing to put a quotation in qoutation mark
➢ Giving incorrect information about the source of qoutation
➢ Changing words but copying the sentence structure of source without giving
credit
➢ Copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of
your work, whether you give credit or not.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM ?

o We must be more confident in creating assignments, even if they are not as

good as those of a few others.
o We must come up with our own ideas and develop them ourselves.
o We should be open-minded to gather ideas and avoid taking ideas from others.
o If we don't understand something, we should ask our friends for clarification and
engage in discussions. This way, we can also indirectly exchange ideas with
them.

CALCULATING GRADE POINT EVERAGE…

❖ What is GPA or CGPA?

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is used to gauge the academic
proficiency of a Malaysian university graduate. Grade Point Average (GPA) is an
abbreviation for Grade Point Average, reflecting a student's performance across
various semesters.
❖ How to know our grade and pointer?

Here is the grade marking system used by UiTM.
