Unit 2 Mini-Project: Design A Neighbourhood

Due: Wed., Oct. 18 at 11:59 PM

Knowledge /6 Application /7 Thinking/Inquiry /6 Communication /5

Learning Objective: To demonstrate an understanding of distance and midpoints both graphically and
algebraically.

BACKGROUND: You have the unusual opportunity to help a team of civil

engineers design a neighbourhood which will include:
- your home (located at (0, 0))
- 1 convenience store
- 1 post office
- 1 school (must be at midpoint between your home and the post office)

Refresher Video Lessons

● How to Plot Points on a Coordinate Plane
● Distance & Midpoint
● How to find the Equation of Median (until 6:38)

PART 1: THE MAP [K /5]

Step 1) Put a point at (0, 0) and label it ‘Home’.

Step 2) Pick points (with integer coordinates that fit in the given grid) to represent the other buildings (1
convenience store, 1 post office, & 1 school) in your neighbourhood and label them. Remember the school must
be at the midpoint between your home and the post office (Jamboard version of graph) and all the buildings
including the home cannot be in a straight horizontal line or vertical line.

PART 2: CALCULATIONS [K /1, A /7, T/I /6]

1. The mayor of the town wants you to prove you have placed the school in the middle
between your home and the post office. How can you prove this to the mayor using the
coordinates for your home and for the post office? Show all steps. Explain your thinking.
(Application - 3 marks)

School =. 5,-5.
H.o m e = 0,0
P o = 1 0 - ,-1 0

2. If you ride your bike from your home to the school, then to the convenience store, and then
back home, how much distance will you have travelled in total? Assume you can take the
shortest distance to go directly to each location and that each unit is 1km. (Application - 4
marks)

Home → School School → Convenience Store Convenience Store → Home

0 0→ (__,__)
(__,__) 5,-5 5 -5 → (__,__)
(__,__) -5 5 -5 5→ (__,__)

3. The mayor requests that you build a mall that is no more than 3 km away from the school.
Where could you build the mall so that it meets this requirement? Add the coordinates to this
mall to your graph in Part A, and show all calculations required to prove that your grocery store
meets this criteria. (Knowledge - 1 mark for correctly plotting point; Thinking - 3 marks)

4. Connect the points representing your ‘Home’, the ‘School’ and the ‘Mall’ such that it forms a
triangle. Choose one of these points. Write the equation of the median from this point.
(Thinking - 3 marks)

Part 3: Consultation With Teacher [C /5]

During one of the scheduled work periods (Mon., Oct. 16 - Wed., Oct. 18, you must consult with your
teacher to explain your process behind how you answered at least one of the questions above.
During this time, you should also ask your teacher if you are having difficulty completing any parts of
this project. You may use the space below to record any key takeaways from your consultation.
