The Benefits of Physical Education for Children with Special Needs

Including students with special needs into a physical education curriculum is difficult. Allowing a child with

special needs to engage in physical education programs may cause parents discomfort. Because special

education students are less likely to take physical education classes than their general education peers,

research has indicated that special education students are more likely to become obese as children.

However, a lot of materials are now available to make it simpler to involve kids with special needs in

physical education activities.

Physical education can improve cognitive function and academic performance, as scientific study has

consistently shown. Nonetheless, it is beneficial for kids with special needs for a variety of reasons,

including giving them the chance to develop their social and collaborative skills and teaching them how to

concentrate on specific objectives while overcoming barriers. To ensure that all students with special needs

can succeed in physical education and the school environment, parents and teachers are urged to come up

with innovative approaches to apply acceptable adaptations. (School Specialty,2017.)

7 Ways to Include a Student with Special Needs in Physical Education

Physical education can improve cognitive function and academic performance, as has repeatedly been

shown. A balanced physical education curriculum also builds social skills and cooperative working. In order
for all children to benefit from the life lessons that cannot be taught in a traditional classroom, let's make

physical education inclusive and accessible to all. (Karen Wang, 2013)

Inclusive School Physical Education and Physical Activity

No matter their level of skill, all students should engage in the minimum of 60 minutes of daily physical

activity. By providing students with disabilities equal opportunities, schools can benefit all students in

following this advice. Every student gains from being taught how to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle

by developing an inclusive culture for physical education and physical activity. Encourages students with

disabilities to participate in physical education and other physical activities in the same abilities and

conditions as their peers who aren't disabled. (Division of Population Health, National Center for Chronic

Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2010)

Gap of the topic

Studies shown that there’s a lot of benefits of physical activity for students especially for the students with

special needs. Also, there are so many ways to make the physical education class more inclusive for

students with disabilities so that everyone will receive the physical benefits that they need. But is it really

happening? Does every physical education teacher really understands the importance of physical activity

for students with special needs?. Some teachers are just exempting those students and just giving them a
passing grade, but what will they do with those grades if they are not receiving the true benefits of physical

education.

Contribution to the existing body of knowledge

This study will spread awareness for the readers to know the importance of physical education not only for

average person but also for student with special needs. Also, this research will inform the parents and

teachers that there is a lot of alternative ways for students with special needs to get the body development

they needed,
