Teaching Physical Education and Health in the Elementary Grades

ACTIVITY 1:

EXPERIENCE: In one sentence, develop your definition of physical education and health using the
different definition given in this module and from credible websites.

Physical education is an educational subject that focuses on physical development and the
improvement of physical fitness. It is typically taught in schools and involves students participating in
various physical activities and games such as team sports, gymnastics, dance, and individual activities like
running and jumping. Physical education classes aim to improve students' physical abilities, including
strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and endurance.
Nowadays, we live in a world where sports and social activities play significant roles in
everybody’s lives. Thus, they often compete with their importance with academic classes at universities
and colleges. However, sports and social activities are indeed beneficial for students. Doing sports can
help them to stretch their muscles, do a lot of exercises and, thus, be healthy and fit. Furthermore, as social
activities include art groups, cooking and gardening, it gives students opportunity to improve their
communication skills.
Additionally, Physical education lessons often focus on developing sportsmanship, teamwork, and
communication skills. The ultimate goal of physical education is to promote a healthy lifestyle and lifelong
physical activity. More than that, not only these activities are productive for students’ physical health and
interactions, but they also play a major role on their mental health. By saying this, I mean that with the
help of sports and social activities students unleash negativity, release stress and forget about their daily
problems.
Health education is a matter of teaching the community and the individual how to guard against
health hazards. It is not only providing information on the aspects that will have an effect on your health
like biological, environmental and social risk factors, but also changing people's perspectives to actually
want to change. When people truly understand a concept, they are much more likely to take it to heart.
Health education is also a skill, since not everyone will digest health education the same. Gender,
ethnicity, age and current health status will affect the way health education messages are received and also
retained.
Nowadays, people are avoiding exercising and eating healthy foods. Parents have other priorities
and working late and they prefer pizza and outside foods instead of a home-cooked meal. Increasing a kid
on fast foods is bad habits of eating and ends up being weighty. Deprived of good healthy role models how
are kids supposed to develop habits of good eating? In today’s society, the importance of learning healthy
and exercise is very important. How nice is to see that kids play sports, run around and play on the
playground rather than burying their face in the electronic devices.
Through health education, students have a chance to get knowledge about the health risks.
Without education, the student would not even know what heart diseases are or how to prevent it. They

should not only study physical health but also mental health, social and emotional health too. Many
students face mental health issues that come with depression, anxiety, eating disorder and much more.
They might not even realize what is really going on in their own body.
Furthermore, health education program can provide individuals with the knowledge and skills
necessary to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. It can also help promote positive
behavioral changes and help people take steps to protect their health. Health education is significant
because health is a great advantage to human life. By health education, students are instructed to adopt the
habit of good health and to develop the individual and health of the country.
