CHAPTER I

Introduction

Excess weight in the young population has serious health

implications. The frequencies of endocrine, metabolic, orthopedic and

psychological disorders are significantly higher in children and adolescents

with obesity than in peers with normal body weight. Research indicates

that approximately 80% of obese adolescents will remain obese in

adulthood. Adolescence is a period of many essential changes in physical,

psychological and social growth. It is also a key period in developing

lifestyle and nutritional behaviors that may have various health implications

for young individuals. One of the lifestyle components that are crucial for

adolescent growth is a well-balanced diet.

Many authors highlight the insufficient knowledge of a healthy

lifestyle among the young generation, including their choices regarding

eating. The most common nutrition mistakes committed by adolescents are

eating meals irregularly, including omitting breakfast, consuming an

improperly balanced diet and consuming large amounts of highly

processed products and sweetened beverages. In 2019, the 4th National

Nutrition Conference was held to discuss why the obesity epidemic

continuously grows despite the actions taken in 2006 at the WHO

European Ministerial Conference on Counteracting Obesity in Istanbul. At

that time, all European countries committed to implementing the strong,

comprehensive actions recommended in the European Charter on

Counteracting Obesity to achieve a reversal of the trend of increasing

obesity by 2015.

The “National Program for the Prevention of Overweight and

Obesity” was a response to the ideas contained in the Charter, signed by

the Polish Minister of Health in 2006. One of the two specific objectives of

the Program included preventing overweight and obesity, improving

nutrition quality and physical activity of children and adolescents. As

studies have shown, there has been no success in reversing and even

stopping the trend of increasing obesity. This problem is very complex and

challenging to explain.

Knowledge of nutrition behaviors is an essential element in

designing educational activities aimed at eliminating these undesirable

habits. These actions may contribute to the reduction of excessive body

weight among children and adolescents. Research emphasizes the

effectiveness of programs promoting a healthy diet and physical activity

and the importance of more personalized actions, as well as the need to

identify potential barriers for such actions. The primary purpose of this

study was to characterize nutrition behaviors of adolescents and their

knowledge about food and nutrition in the context of the risk of developing

overweightness or obesity. The secondary aim was to identify improper

dietary behaviors of adolescents, verify the relationship of these behaviors

with their level of nutrition knowledge and indicate directions for

educational activities aimed at increasing their awareness about the

diseases of civilization. (Mizia, et.al 2021)

BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

Good nutrition help student show up at the school prepared to learn.

Because improvements in nutrition make the student heal their students an

likely to have fever absences and attended class more frequents studies

show that malnutrition leads to behavior problems and that has negative
impact on child behavior. The student when they’re well nourished and

eating healthy meals has been linked to higher grades better memory and

are faster information processing. We want these topic because healthy

students are more likely to attend to school are better able to focus in class

and better position and to achieve academic success. Our target on our

research studies are the 10 students. Our target on our research studies

are those students in senior high school in Saint Anne Academy in

Binubusan, Lian, Batangas.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Health behavior theories are useful Beliefs about one’s own abilities and
to interpret adolescents’ dietary perspective-taking are essential for
behaviors. Evidences show that appropriate behavior in professional
theories are influenced by social and social life, cooperative learning,
and psychological determinants. So, and situations were conflict is
the purpose of this study is to occurring. The social comparison
systematically review studies that theory and previous research
tested social cognitive theories suggested positive relations between
(non-integrated) that predict school students’ beliefs about one’s
adolescents’ dietary behaviors own abilities and perspective-taking.
The hypotheses were: Beliefs about
one’s own abilities and perspective-
taking are positively related to each
other after the transition to
secondary school and will fade
thereafter.

These two theory are connected to research because food help students to enhance
their study ability that benefits and help to boost their knowledge also healthy lifestyle
behaviors have given emphasis as an important characteristic in health promotion and
to prevent diseases.

your food, having access to beneficial, culturally-specific foods and having

a safe place to enjoy them with your family and loved ones. Healthy foods

are those that provide you with the nutrients you need to sustain your

body's well-being and retain energy. Water, carbohydrates, fat, protein,

vitamins, and minerals are the key nutrients that make up a healthy,

balanced diet. (mnfoodcharter.com)

work, such as paid vacation time, a pension plan, and discounts on gym

memberships. Governments also offer its citizens benefits, usually in the

form of money for specific situations or needs. You might receive

unemployment benefits when you’re out of work and can’t find a job. A

disabled person can receive disability benefits when they are unable to
work or to work full time. Benefits are also public entertainment or

theatrical events that raise money for charitable causes. advantage.

service teachers and school librarians who participated in the course

described in this chapter. Students are primarily a person enrolled in an

educational institution. The term ‘students’ refers to individuals registered

and recognized as learners in educational institutions like colleges and

universities for the purpose of acquiring knowledge and skills that could

enhance personal developments to prepare them for the world of work. In

UNDERSTANDING WAYS TO COLLECT DATA

Qualitative research is a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks an in-

depth understanding of social phenomena within their natural setting. It's a

systematic subject approach used to describe life experiences and give

them meaning. With the use of Qualitative Research, we will be able to

answer the questions that we want to be answered for our study.

Research Setting

The study was conducted in Saint Anne Academy, Binubusan, Lian

Batangas, by online survey student can answer our survey. It can

accommodate 10 persons. The respondent will be comfortable at this place

because they can answer by not going to any room. The time frame for the

study was from April 2023.

Population

Our target on our research studies are those students in senior high

school in Saint Anne Academy in Binubusan, Lian, Batangas. Its help

student to inform and give their knowledge on how it is important being

healthy or eating healthy foods.

Sampling Procedure
The respondents of the study comprised of 10 Grade-12 students

who’s currently taking up TVL-Home Economic: Cookery at Saint Anne

Academy. The sampling design that we utilized was Purposive sampling.

The respondents are Grade-12 TVL- HE: Cookery student of Saint Anne

Academy. The said respondents chose because the said respondents is

the only student who can answer the surveys and our study is all about the

abilities of TVL: Cookery student of Saint Anne Academy.

Data collection Procedure

The process of gathering and measuring information on variables of

interest, in an establishment systematic fashion that enables one to

answer stated research questions, test hypothesis, and evaluate outcome.

The methods we will use are the use of survey tool and questionnaires.

Data Gathering Procedure

Upon the approval of the proposal by the research committee, the

researchers made a letter for the approval to conduct the study at Saint

Anne Academy, Binubusan, Lian, Batangas. During the visit, the date of

the collections of the data from the respondents was set. The researcher
gave an informed consent before the start of the interview. We used an

interview guide, questionnaires themselves to ask questions to the

respondents. The answers made by the respondents recorded and written

on the interview guide questionnaires as the data for this study. After

gathering data, we collect and made transcriptions of the gathered

responses.

Statistical Techniques

The researchers need the percentage distribution formula to

describe

the tabulated data for respondent profile.
