Kvaerner Masa-Yards Technology is a separate business

unit whose activities include R & D, naval architecture,
ship yard production technology and technology transfer
services. Work is carried out both for outside customers
and Kvaerner Masa-Yards.
Feasibility studies, product development, ship design
and project and new building assistance are offered to
customers within the sectors of marine leisure, transport
systems and arctic operation.

Ship Technology Technology Transfer

The Ship Technology department works in
close co-operation with our customers. We
concentrate on developing new concepts
and solutions for cruise ships, passenger-
car ferries, advanced freight vessels and
transport systems.
We offer R&D, ship design and engineering
services to assist our customers in their
new building projects at the pre-contract
and basic design stage.
The ship development work covers
designing, model testing and
evaluation of alternative concepts
to find the best, both technically
feasible and economically
profitable, solution.
The Ship Technology department
has long experience of demanding
naval architectural tasks, ship
styling and interior lay-out work.
The Technology Transfer department
offers know-how and design of LNG
carriers, FPSO units and ice-going
cargo ships. Kvaerner Masa-Yards
has built many types of high-tech
vessels, e.g. advanced tankers,
research vessels for the offshore oil
and gas industry and cable layers.

Arctic Technology

The Masa-Yards Arctic Technology Centre (MARC) concentrates

on solutions for transport systems in ice-bound waters
comprising harbours, off-loading facilities, drilling / production
platforms, transport ships, support vessels and icebreakers.
Our services are primarily related to feasibility studies, design
and development tasks. Ships are tested in our own model
basin and the tests are verified by full scale trials in ice
conditions. Expeditions are made to measure and collect
environmental ice data for our data base.

DAT - Double-Acting Tanker

The bow of the DAT is optimised for open water navigation, but in hard
ice conditions the ship uses its stern for ice breaking. The solution
takes advantage of the Azipod propulsion unit.

Welding Technology & Quality control

Shipyard Technology
The Shipyard Technology department includes Shipyard
Development, Welding Laboratory and Quality Control.
Shipyard development work is done both for Kvaerner
Masa-Yards, other Kvaerner yards and outside shipyards,
e.g. Ingalls Shipbuilding in the USA.
Our Welding Laboratory is actively involved in the
development of new welding and production methods,
technical information work, training and qualification of
welders and material testing and inspections. The
production of light weight structures, of both high tensile
steel and aluminium, is being studied.

The Quality Control department carries out quality

inspections of welding as well as non-destructive testing
(NDT).

shipyards.
The information service works for our
yards but also produces special reports
for outside customers.
