Data Rate
The data rate, which is also called transfer rate, is defined as the number of bits transmitted per
second and is measured in Megabits per second(Mbps) or Gigabits per second(Gbps). The data
rates of common transceiver modules are shown as follows: 155Mbps, 622Mbps, 1.25Gbps,
2.5Gbps, 10Gbps, 25Gbps, 40Gbps, 100Gbps, etc.
Since the data rate is backward compatible, a 155M transceiver module is also called the Fast Eth-
ernet (FE) transceiver when installed on a 100M Ethernet port. Similarly, a 1.25G transceiver
module is also called the Gigabit Ethernet (GE) transceiver when installed on a 1G Ethernet port.
Hillstone transceiver modules mainly provide the following data rates: 100Gbps, 40Gbps,
10Gbps, and 1.25Gbps.
Form Factors
The size of a transceiver module is defined and prescribed by form factors. The form factors of
transceiver modules include 300pin, XENPAK, X2, GBIC, SFP, XFP, SFP+, SFP28, CSFP,
QSFP+, CXP, CFP, CFP2, CFP4, CFP8, CPAK, QSFP28, CDFP, Micro QSFP, QSFP-DD,
QSFP28, OSFP, and DSFP. Today, ever-smaller transceiver form factors have become feasible
with features such as lower power dissipation, lower cost, higher speed, and longer transmission
distance.
Hillstone transceiver modules use the following form factors: SFP, XFP, SFP+, QSFP+, and
QSFP28.
Transmission Distance
Losses and dispersion during the transmission of optical signals limit the achievable transmission
distance. Not all transceiver modules can transmit data at the same distance. Therefore, trans-
ceiver modules can be categorized as short-reach transceivers( with a transmission distance of less
than 2km) and long-reach transceivers(with a transmission distance over 10km).
Center Wavelength
Center wavelength (CWL) represents the waveband used for optical signal transmission. In the
transmission of optical signals, the center wavelength should be the same on the receive side and
the transmit side. The following center wavelengths are available for common optical transceiver
modules: the 850nm waveband, the 1310nm waveband, the 1550nm waveband, wavebands from
1270nm to 1610nm with a wavelength spacing of 20nm (CWDM), and wavebands from 1528nm -
1623nm with a wavelength spacing of 0.8nm or 0.4nm (DWDM).
l 1310nm and 1550nm wavebands: Used for middle-reach and long-reach transmission.
The following center wavelengths are available for Hillstone transceiver modules: the 850nm
waveband, the 1310nm waveband, and the 1550nm waveband.
l SM transceivers are suitable for high-speed and long-reach transmission, such as in the met-
ropolitan area network(MAN).
l MM transceivers are suitable for short-reach transmission, and the kind of transmission that
goes through multiple network nodes.
MM devices only work over MMF. SM devices work over both MMF and SMF. However, the
transmission effect is not guaranteed if SM devices work over MMF.
6. Price
While single-mode fiber itself is cheaper than multi-mode, the price of multimode transceivers is
typically a fraction of the price of their single-mode counterparts.
7. Pull Ring Colors
Generally, to distinguish different types of transceiver modules, manufacturers provide pull rings
of different colors. MM transceiver modules have black pull rings while SM transceiver modules
have blue, yellow, or purple pull rings.
Hillstone transceiver modules support both SM and MM transceivers. You can select appropriate
transceiver modules according to your own needs. For more information, see "Core Diameter/
Fiber Mode".
Core Diameter
An optical fiber is composed of coating, cladding, and core. When fiber diameter is mentioned, it
refers to the core diameter. According to international standards, the core diameter of MMF is
62.5µm and 50µm, and that of SMF is 9µm.
Different Hillstone transceiver modules support optical fibers with different core diameters. You
can refer to "Core Diameter/ Fiber Mode" to select appropriate optical fibers.
Transmit Power
The transmit power of transceiver modules refers to the output optical power of the light source
on the transmit side of the transceiver module. The transmit power of one device should be
within the receive power range of its connected counterpart. Optical power can be measured in
watts(W), milliwatts(mW), or decibel milliwatts(dBm). Typically, optical power is measured in
dBm.
Receiver Sensitivity
Receiver sensitivity (measured in dBm) refers to the minimum input optical power of a trans-
ceiver module at a specific data rate and bit error rate(BER). That is, the minimum power level at
which the receiving components can correctly extract the useful signals being transmitted. The
maximum receiver sensitivity limits the minimum transmit power.
Extinction Ratio
Extinction ratio refers to the ratio of two optical power levels of a digital signal generated by a
light source. These two power levels can be represented as P1 (transmitted 1) and P0 (transmitted
0). The extinction ratio represents the ability of transceiver modules to distinguish 0 signal and 1
signal. It is an important measure of transceiver quality. However, the quality of the transceiver
modules is not positively related to its extinction ratio and is defined as whether the extinction
ratio complies with the IEEE 802.3 standard.
Notes: When optical ports on Hillstone firewall products are used to transmit data,
you should only insert genuine Hillstone transceiver modules, and the connected
transceiver modules should follow the same interface standard.
l "****" indicates data rate, such as 10(M), 100(M), 1000(M), 10G, 40G, and 100G.
l "m" indicates the center wavelength of the laser, such as S (Short Wavelength: 850nm), L
(Long Wavelength: 1310nm), E (Extra Long Wavelength: 1550nm), and B (Bidirectional Long
Wavelength).
l "R" indicates coding format, such as T (twisted pair), X (8B/10B), R (64B/66B), and W
l "n" indicates path numbers, such as 4 and 10. If there is no number, it indicates a single path.
For example, 100GBASE-LR4 indicates that the module supports a data rate of 100Gbps and
operates in baseband technology. Its center wavelength is 1310nm (long wavelength). The mod-
ule operates with 64B/66B coding, and the signal is transmitted via four paths, the effective data
rate of each path is 25Gbps.
Tip:
The above features of Hillstone optical ports require StoneOS 5.5R8 and later
versions. Lower versions may need to be upgraded to 5.5R8 or later.
Interoperability
Hillstone 100GE(QSFP28) optical ports and 40GE(QSFP+) optical ports can interoperate with
25G optical ports and 10G optical ports respectively via fiber break-out cables and 4-path trans-
ceiver modules with MPO connectors.
Tip:
1. For more information about the devices supporting 100GE(QSFP28)
optical ports, see 100GE(QSFP28) Transceiver Module > Device Com-
patibility.
l 40GE(QSFP+) Optical Port: The default data rate is 40Gbps. It can interoperate with 10G
optical ports via fiber break-out cables and the 4-path TRAN-SR-QSFP+ with MPO con-
nectors. To interoperate with 10G optical ports, use the channel-speed 10000 command in
the optical port configuration mode.
To restore the default data rate of the optical port, use the no channel-speed command in the
optical port configuration mode.
Notes:
l When a 100GE(QSFP28) optical port interoperates with 25G optical ports or
a 40GE(QSFP+) optical port interoperates with 10G optical ports, its data
rate cannot be backward switched.
Backward Compatibility
Hillstone 100GE(QSFP28) optical port and 10GE(SFP+) optical port provide backward com-
patibility. When the data rate is backward switched, the optical port should be inserted into the
corresponding transceiver module. Note: 1GE(SFP) optical port does not support backward com-
patibility.
l 10GE(SFP+) Optical Port: The default data rate is 10Gbps, and can be backward switched to
1Gbps. When inserted into the 1GE(SFP) transceiver module, 10GE(SFP+) optical ports
require no extra operation if they can automatically switch their data rate to 1Gbps. Other-
wise, use the channel-speed 1000 command in the optical port configuration mode.
To restore the default data rate, use the no channel-speed command in the optical port con-
figuration mode.
Notes:
l When the data rate is backward switched, the 100GE(QSFP28) optical port
cannot interoperate with 10G optical ports.
l 10GE(SFP+) Optical Port: Supports copper SFP module (excluding K-series IOC-K-
2SFP+-FT-WX). When inserted into the copper SFP, 10GE(SFP+) optical ports require no
extra operation if they can automatically switch their data rate to 1Gbps. Otherwise, use the
channel-speed 1000 command in the optical port configuration mode.
l 1GE(SFP) Optical Port: Supports copper SFP module. You can insert the copper SFP dir-
ectly.
To restore the default data rate, use the no channel-speed command in the optical port con-
figuration mode.
Notes:
l Delete optical port configuration before switching the data rate.
