Future Past Present
Erin Meyer, author of the book "The Culture Map", based on her experience, came to the
conclusion that cultural differences can be expressed using a scale in the following areas:
Conflict resolution
Conflict resolution is a way for two
or more parties to find a peaceful
solution to a disagreement among
them. The disagreement may be
personal, financial, political, or
emotional.

The main goal of negotiation with your opposition is to come to an agreement that
benefits all parties.
HOW SHOULD YOU
RESOLVE CONFLICT?
There are seven steps to successfully negotiating the resolution of a conflict:

Understand the conflict

Communicate with the opposition
Brainstorm possible resolutions
Choose the best resolution
Use a third party mediator
Explore alternatives
Cope with stressful situations and pressure tactics
SENSITIVITY
What is sensitivity in intercultural communication?

Intercultural sensitivity can be defined as “an individual's ability

to develop emotion towards understanding and appreciating
cultural differences that promotes appropriate and effective
behavior in intercultural communication”.
The importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness
• Helps us understand how cultural differences may affect and influence
individuals when forming their unique personalities, perceptions, and their
interactions with others. It gives us access to a different society and culture.

• This is good since language is the main mode of communication amongst

people. Cultural awareness makes communicating with different people easier
and more stress-free.

• Cultural s and awareness also increases our cultural competence of the people
around us and all over the world, helping us develop a deeper understanding of
other people's culture as well as our own, increasing our tolerance and
broadening our minds.
• Cultural awareness is important because:
* It makes us global citizens
* It helps us create a homogenous and inclusive work environment

• Culture and customs include how people live, role expectations, child rearing
practices, food and include health practices. Increasing cultural sensitivity
involves several major steps:
* Defining Cultural Sensitivity
 * Valuing diversity
 * Being capable of honest self-assessment
* Being conscious of the dynamics inherent when cultures intersect
 * Having developed approaches that are adapted to diversity
The six developmental stages of intercultural communication and sensitivity:

• Denial
• Defence
• Minimization
• Acceptance
• Adaptation
• Integration
