MATEO, JERIC S. December 7, 2023

ACTIVITY NO. 3

1. Why did Rizal travel abroad for the second time?

Jose Rizal traveled overseas for the second time in 1888, driven by a mix of
patriotic, educational, and personal motives. First, as the political climate in the
Philippines under Spanish colonial authority worsened, Rizal looked to progressive ideas
flowing in Europe for answers and insights. His first overseas assignment made him
aware of the cruel reality of colonial rule and the injustices experienced by his fellow
Filipinos, which inspired him to look into reform options.

Second, Rizal wanted to carry on with his scholarly and intellectual endeavors. At
the Universidad Central de Madrid, he enrolled in graduate school and studied a wide
range of subjects, including physics, philosophy, and literature. In addition to his
academic pursuits, he traveled to Europe in search of information that he might then use
to improve his native country.

Finally, Rizal's second trip abroad provided him with the opportunity to actively
engage in the worldwide debate on freedom, equality, and justice. He interacted with
well-known intellectuals, reformers, and activists, absorbing many political philosophies
and finding motivation in a range of movements. His growing views on nationalism, civil
rights, and government were impacted by this experience

In essence, Rizal's choice to travel overseas for the second time was motivated
by a great feeling of responsibility to his nation, a passion for knowledge, and a desire to
contribute to the worldwide discourse about human rights and societal progress.
