Submit online the answer of all the questions and your Solidworks file
Getting accustomed with SolidWorks so that you can draw a shaft with a rectangular cross-
section and a cylindrical shaft
Learn the use of Solidworks simulation toolbox and apply pure torsion on the shaft by applying
torque at one end of the shaft
Calculate the maximum the shear stress for both shaft theoretically and compare the results that
you obtain from the simulation
Project deliverables
* The caption for all the screenshots must be given below the screenshot
1. Draw a solid cylindrical shaft of 3” dia and 10” long. The torque applied is 36000 lb-in. One end
is fixed. The material is ASTM A36 steel. Calculate the maximum shear stress using the theory
(10 points)
2. Draw the cylindrical shaft in Solidworks and apply all the conditions given in 1. Show the shear
stress distribution in the shaft across the cross section. Is your shear stressing same as the
theoretical calculation? (show the screen shot with caption ) (10 points)
3. What is the effect of mesh on the results? Is the same kind of mesh required for the whole length
and the cross sections? To answer this, show screenshot with caption of two different kind of
meshes (20 points)
4. You will compare your observations to a rectangular shaft of same cross-sectional area using the
simulation tool only. The M and N must be different for everybody (20 points)

5. Give the screenshots of both the shafts after deformation side by side. Caption them properly(10
points)
6. Give details of your observation regarding the effect of torsion on a rectangular shaft (see Figure A). Give
plots of shear stress across the cross section vs. radial position for both the rectangular and the cylindrical
shaft with proper labeling and captions (20 points)
7. Did this project help you in understanding torsion? What do you think about the simulation
technique you have learned? (5+5 points)
