Causes, consequences and risks of being


overweight today.
What is obesity?
It is a chronic treatable disease that appears when there is an excess of adipose tissue
(fat) in the body.
What is overweight?
It is defined as an abnormal and excessive accumulation of fat that can be detrimental to
health.
Causes:
- Intake of psychotropic drugs, such as antidepressants or tranquilizers, and hormonal
drugs.
- Sedentary lifestyle or poor diet.
- Metabolic disorders or alterations.
- Genetic factors such as hypothyroidism or Cushing's syndrome.
- Stress, anxiety, depression or some TCA.
- Socio-economic problems: Avoiding obesity is difficult if you do not have areas or
spaces suitable for exercise. Similarly, they may not have been taught healthy ways to
cook or may not have access to healthier foods.

Consequences:
- All causes of death (mortality)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol or high triglyceride levels (dyslipidemia)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Coronary heart disease
- Stroke or stroke
- Gallbladder disease
- Osteoarthritis (breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
- Sleep apnea and breathing problems
- Various types of cancer
- Low quality of life
- Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety and other mental disorders
- Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning
Healthy eating:
Healthy eating consists of eating a variety of foods that give you the nutrients you need
to stay healthy, feel good and have energy. These nutrients include protein,
carbohydrates, fats, water, vitamins and minerals. Emphasizes the importance of fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, milk and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Includes a variety
of protein foods such as seafood, lean meats, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), soy
products, nuts and seeds. Contain low amounts of saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol,
salt (sodium) and added sugars. Stays within your daily caloric needs.
