Title: Exploring Molecular Movement: Time and Distance Analysis

Objective:
To engage students in a scientific investigation to calculate the time and distance molecules
travel from a release point inside the classroom to each student's seat, considering the seat
plan. This activity aims to develop critical thinking skills and an understanding of the factors
influencing molecular movement.

Materials:
Stopwatch or timer
Measurement tools (ruler, tape measure, or meterstick)
Classroom seat plan
Paper or notebook for calculations
Perfume

Procedure:

Introduction :
Discuss the concept of molecular movement and diffusion, emphasizing its relevance in various
environments.
Introduce the activity goal: to calculate the time and distance molecules travel from a specific
point to each student's seat based on the classroom seat plan.
Encourage students to brainstorm factors that might affect the speed and efficiency of molecular
movement within the classroom.

Seat Plan Analysis ( discuss with your tablemates):


Distribute the classroom seat plan to each student.
Instruct students to measure and record the distance from the point of origin (where molecules
are released) to their respective seats.
Facilitate a class discussion on how different seat arrangements and obstacles in the classroom
may impact molecular movement.

Time Measurement :
Form groups based on seat proximity.(per tale)
Designate a starting point (the release point of molecules).
Use the stopwatch or timer to measure the time it takes for molecules to reach each group's
average seat location.
Record the time for each student and get the average per group (in the event that not all student
per table was able to smell the perfume).

In groups, discuss and calculate the average time it took for molecules to reach their seats.
Use the measured distance and time to calculate the average speed of molecular movement for
each group.

1. How does the classroom layout influence the time it takes for molecules to reach different
seats?

The time it takes for molecules, such as those from perfume, to reach different seats in a
classroom can be influenced by the layout based on proximity to the release point and
environmental circumstances. Students in close proximity to the release point will perceive the
aroma initially, while others in distant seats will take longer to discover anything. Furthermore,
the layout has an impact on environmental elements such as air circulation and ventilation. An
open architecture with strong air circulation allows molecules to flow swiftly and efficiently,
allowing them to reach other seats more quickly. A closed or obstructed arrangement, on the
other hand, impedes molecular migration, resulting in a slower and less effective diffusion
process.

2. What role does air circulation play in the movement of molecules?


How might obstacles or open spaces affect the speed of molecular movement?

We began our experiment by leaving the windows open. As a result, we were able to
smell the scent molecules faster than we could close it. The reason for this is because leaving
the windows open can have a substantial impact on the mobility of molecules in the classroom.
This is due to improved air circulation and ventilation, which allows molecules to diffuse more
quickly and efficiently. Opening the windows improves air circulation and mixing, creating a
more favorable atmosphere for effective molecular diffusion. As a result, the perfume particles
spread more quickly around the classroom.

Closing the windows, on the other hand, will have the opposite effect. Instead of
resulting in a faster time for the scent molecules to migrate, it would result in a slower time and
less efficient molecular diffusion. Closing the windows reduces air movement and ventilation,
which affects the diffusion process.

3. Are there patterns or trends in the data that suggest certain factors are more influential than
others?

Yes, leaving the windows open and allowing air circulation and ventilation into the
classroom appears to have a greater impact on the dispersion process of the scent molecules
than closing the windows and limiting any ventilation. This is demonstrated by the time it takes
the perfume molecules to scent within our individual seats.

Conclusion:

The findings of the following activity/experiment show how diverse circumstances affect
the diffusion process of air molecules. During the activity/experiment, it was discovered that
leaving the windows open and allowing air and ventilation inside the classroom increases the
speed and efficiency of the perfume molecules' diffusion process, whereas closing the window
and restricting any air and ventilation slows it down. As a result, it is possible to deduce that the
existence of air movement and ventilation plays an important role in the diffusion of molecules.
