HOW TO RESEARCH A
HERITAGE SITE
Think about "ways of looking"-

think about what you are interested in

researching and write key phrases.

IDENTIFY
Think about connections between the

themes you want to research. TOPIC/THEME

The web you make will define and limit

your research scope.

To do this, start reading general literature

about your themes- literature can include

books, articles, videos, films and art work.

Begin to think about what has already been

PRELIMINARY
written or said about your selected themes.

RESEARCH Think about what more you can do or add

to in order to enhance that knowledge or

how you may interpret things you have read

about.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Once you have stated thinking about the topic

you are interested in and what are the ways in

which you want to study your topic, begin to

make plans about how to get the answers you

want.

This means you should THINK about the

questions you want to ask. Make a lists of at

least two questions for every theme, but

always ask: "How will I find out the answer

to this question when I set out to do the

fieldwork"
Always try finding the original

sources. This means, look for original

texts, historical sources or people

who may have the answers you are

FIELDWORK/
looking for.

When reading an author's work LITERATURE

always see their bibliography for

authentic sources. Avoid quoting

second-hand or using unverifiable

information.
The sources you cite, must be true. If you

are interpreting a source, always mention it.

Do not use wikipedia or similar sites for

research purposes.

Be very observant on your field visits. Make

observations about how things look, and

how people behave or react.

While listening to oral histories, for example,

it is important to take notice of the tone of

voice of the speaker as much as to the

content of what is being said.

Organize your work and notes in diaries.

WRITING-UP

Use your organized research, notes and observations

and begin writing a story you want to tell.

Keep it Simple and Straightforward.

Always write in active voice.

ETHICS

Always cite your sources in your text and

bibliography.

Take permission from people before taking

their pictures or recording their

conversations.

Be honest.
