Subject: Physics Duration: 40min

Q.1) (a) AB is a current carrying conductor in the plane of the paper as shown in the figure.

(i) What are the directions of magnetic fields produced by it at points P and Q?
(ii) If r1>r2, where will the strength of the magnetic field be larger?
(b) What does the degree of closeness of magnetic field lines near the poles signify?
(c) Give any two uses of an electromagnet. Draw the patterns of magnetic field lines of an
electromagnet. [4]
Q.2) The diagram shows the lengthwise section of a current carrying solenoid. ⵙ indicates current
emerging out of the page and indicates current entering into the page. Decide which end of the
solenoid A or B, will behave as the north pole. Give reason for your answer. Also draw field
lines inside the solenoid.

Q.3) (a) What is being measured using the voltmeter in the given circuit diagram?

(b) Rohan has three resistors, each of resistance 4 Ω. Draw a diagram and show the working of
how he would join these three resistors to get an equivalent resistance of 6 Ω. [3]
Q.4) Read the following and answer four questions from 13 (i) to 13 (iv).
The heating effect of current is obtained by transformation of electrical energy to heat energy.
Just as mechanical energy used to overcome friction is converted into heat, in the same way,
electrical energy is converted into heat energy when an electric current flows through a
resistance wire. The heat produced in a conductor, when a current flows through it is found
to depend directly on:
strength of the current resistance of the conductor
time for which the current flows.
The mathematical expression is given by H = I2RT.
The electrical fuse, electrical heater, electric iron, and electric geyser are all based on the
heating effect of current. [4]

(i) When the current is doubled in a heating device and time is halved, the heat
energy produced is:
(a) halved (b) doubled (c) four times (d) reduced to one fourth
(ii) Choose the correct properties of an electric fuse wire.
(a) High resistance, high melting point (b) Low resistance, high melting point
(c) High resistance, low melting point (d) Low resistance, low melting point
(iii) What are the properties of a heating element?
(a) Low resistance, low melting point (b) High resistance, high melting point
(c) High resistance, low melting point (d) Low resistance, high melting point
(iv) When a current of 0.5 A passes through a conductor for 5 minutes and the
resistance of the conductor is 12Ω, the amount of heat produced is:
(a) 15 J (b) 900 J (c) 1800 J (d) 30 J
Q.5) In the given circuit, B1, B2 and B3 are three bulbs connected with a battery of 6 V.
(a) What will happen to the glow of the other two bulbs if the bulb B2, gets fused?
(b) If the wattage of each bulb is 3 W, what reading will ammeter A show when all the
three bulbs glow simultaneously.
(c) Find the total resistance of the circuit.
