through the wire also changes. The temperature of the wire is kept the same. Which graph
shows how the p.d. and current are related?

A. Resistivity
B. Conductance
C. Conductivity
D. Internal resistance
SECTION B
Answer in brief. All questions are compulsory.
QUESTION 2
a) i. State Ohm’s law. (3)
The current flowing in a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference
applied across its ends, provided the physical conditions and temperature of the
conductor remain constant.
ii. Draw the I-V graph for a piece of copper wire.
iii. What does the slope of the graph represent?
Slope gives the conductance of the copper wire (C = I/V)
b) Name the material used for the following – (3)
i. standard resistor manganin or constantan
ii. Heating element of toaster nichrome
iii. Bulb filament tungsten
c) An electric iron is rated 200 V, 1kW. Under normal working conditions, find: (4)
i. The resistance of its heating element R = V2/P = 200 x 200 / 1000 = 40 Ω
ii. The amount of current that will flow through the element I = P/V = 1000/200 = 5 A
iii. The amount of heat produced in 5 minutes H = I2Rt = 25 x 40 x 300 = 0.3 x 106 J
iv. The power consumed by the iron if the voltage falls to 180 V. P’ = V’2/R = (180 x 180)/40
P’ = 810 W

QUESTION 3
a) For the given circuit, calculate (3)
i. Total resistance of the circuit Rs = 4 V/0.4 A = 10 Ω
ii. Value of R
20R/(20 + R) = 10 → R = 20 Ω
iii. Current flowing through R
I = V/R = 4 / 20 = 1/5 = 0.2 A
b) The V-I graph for a series combination and for a parallel combination of (2)
two resistors is shown. Which of the two: A or B, represents the parallel
combination? Give reason to justify your answer.

A represents parallel combination as its slope (i.e. resistance) is less compared to

that of B. A parallel combination of two resistors always has lesser equivalent
resistance compared to a series combination of the same resistance.
