1. INTRODUCTION

Based on the laboratory that has been carried out, a product should be designed for the
machining process. The product must have features such as pockets, islands, holes and threads.
First of all, the product will be designed in advance according to the unique idea and drawn on
catia v5 software to get all the measurements and written into a G code program to machine the
product. After getting the measurements, the program will be entered into the cnc machine to
see the cutting simulation first to confirm the program is correct or wrong before the actual
process is done on the product.

Figure 1: Drawing that has been designed for the machining process

Among the advantages of cnc milling machines is that they can achieve very high precision
and they are indispensable in industries that require strict tolerances in the manufacture of a
product. In addition, it can also perform the same program and can be used repeatedly to
produce the same part. Furthermore, cnc milling machines also enable the production of
complex and intricate shapes that are difficult or impossible to achieve with manual milling
machines. Although there are many advantages of using cnc milling machines, they also have
some disadvantages such as the cost to buy the machine is too expensive, requiring high skills
and training for the operation and programming of a cnc milling machine. The high
maintenance cost is also the reason for one of the weaknesses in CNC milling machine.

2.3 PROCEDURE

2.3.3 Product Design

Figure 3: shows as sketching project using paper and pen.

1) Some product design have been sketch by using a piece of paper and a pen involving
facing, pocket, island, and hole processes.

Figure 4: shows as drawing design on catia v5 software

1} Sketch the product design using catia v5 software involving facing, pocket, island and hole
processes.
Figure 5: show as drafting in Catia V5.

2) After the sketch has been drawn in the catia v5 software, the design must changed in the
engineering drawing with all measurement.

2.3.2 Generate Program

Figure 6: show how to determine the coordinates on the haas controller before cutting on cnc
milling.

1) Utilize the finished product design to ascertain the coordinates so that programming for
the CNC milling machine's cutting operation can be made more easily.
Figure 7: show as key in program product in cnc milling maching.

2) After the program simulation is good and no issues, the program can be start to machining
process.

2.3.3 Machine Setup

Figure 8: show as insert the tools into machine.

27) Insert every tools that will be used for the project to start the machining process.
Figure 9: show as using tool probe for set tool length offset for every tools.

27) Use the tool probe to find tool length offset for all tools that need to use. This is to be
able to determine the z axis on each tool.

Figure 10: show as set part datum for work offset by using edge finder tool.

1) After the tool length offset is done, insert the edge finder into the magazine tool slot.
This edge finder is used to find a work offset for workpiece that can determine the datum
on the workpiece.
Figure 11: show as checking zero point after tool offset and work offset process.

2) After both processes are done, make sure to check again so that the tool is at the correct
zero point. If the zero point is in the wrong position, it is necessary to redo the work
offset and tool offset until it is at the correct datum.

Figure 12: show as dry running before start machining process.

3) Once the zero point is positioned correctly, start the dry run process. Make sure the G92
tool offset needs to be adjusted to 50 before proceeding. This is a preventive step to
ensure that nothing goes wrong while the machine is being machined. After
finish, changed back 0 at tool offset on G92.
3. RESULT AND DISCUSSION
3.1 Maching process for product design

Machining Process Description

1. Facing process The facing process uses a facing cutter. The
cutting depth was set at 0.6 mm for cutting
surface of workpiece.

2. Island process A 10mm end mill is used in the island cutting

process. The machine cuts in accordance with
the setup depth of cut, which was set at 0.2 mm.
3. Pocket process A 10mm end mill is also used in the pocket
cutting process. It also makes cuts as deep as
0.2 mm. With the exception of cutting at a
different coordinate, this technique is quite
similar to the island process.

4. Drilling process It uses an 8mm drill bit to drill a hole in the

workpiece during the drilling operation. The
depth of the cut will be 15 mm.

5. Tapping process The tap bit M8x1.25 will be used for the
tapping procedure once the hole has been
drilled to a depth of 15 mm. There will be a 15
mm depth of tapping.

Table 2: Show as machining process.

3.2 Result of product

Figure 13: show as product design had fisish all the process machining on CNC Miling

1) In this project there are several problems experienced before and after the machining
process is carried out on the product. Among the problems faced before the machining
process is that the idea for the design to produce a product is difficult to sketch.
Therefore, another step was taken by producing a simple sketch to design. Next, there
was a problem when the cutting process was carried out. Only one hole and tapping
could be made on the work material due to the design that had been made having a hole
close to other members of the group. Another step has been taken by punching only one
hole in the product so that the process of making holes and tapping goes as usual.

4. CONCLUSION

The conclusion that can be made on this project, students will be able to become more skilled
in the use of catia v5 software to design a desired product. These skills can be used when
they are in the real world of work one day. In addition, with reading skills drawing, students
can also interpret each measurement of the drawing and convert it into a G code program to
be used on the cnc milling machine. With a program, the cooled product can be produced
with the right size. Additionally, students can also train themselves more efficiently in the
use cnc milling machines. It is a very important thing to be a professional machinist.
Moreover,CNC milling machines are known for their ability to produce parts with very high
precision and accuracy.
