HOMEWORK 2

1) We just purchased an electric vehicle and I’m running an extension cord to

charge it. Why isn’t it charging?
It is because of an ordinary extension cord. It could be possible that the gage of wire of
extension cord or the home run would be smaller to carry the amount of power which
required for charge an EV.

2) Can we use an extension cord to charge my EV?

yes, we shall charge it with extension cord, however, for only level 1 charger is
advised. In order to charge with level 2 charger we need to get the extension cord
which is capable of carry 240v, 15A. Nevertheless, it is advised to allocate special
purpose outlet for it.

3) Who can install EV chargers in our home?

The company who sold an EV or a certified electrician can install EV charge at home.

4) What are the three levels of EV charging and what are the requirements for
residential and commercial installation?
There are three levels of EV charging; Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 or Fast Charger
Level 1 and 2 are for residential installation and Level 3 is for generally Commercial implement.
Level 1(AC) requires 120v Single phase (charges in 8-20 hrs)
Level 2(AC) runs on 240v double phase(Charges in 4-8 hrs) and
Level 3(DC) needs 480v three phase(can charge upto 80% in 30 mins)

5) What is Electric Vehicle Management System (EVEMS) technology and is it

safe?
EVEMS is used to control the load making sure that there is a set amount of power allowed to
charge, limiting the risk of inconvenience or overloading problem. Some problems that may occur are
fires either within the charger or the car, however most of the time it is due to inadequate wiring
systems whether the wires are not capable of carrying the current or are old and worn out with time.
The second main problem is how it is connected: if connected to a ground fault circuit interrupter,
they may wear with time, lighting and/or use.
